Fun Things to Do in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Last updated on July 27, 2023
Albuquerque is known as a Southwestern culture hub. It's home to more than a dozen museums and a robust public art program that dots nearly every downtown corner with murals and sculptures. Its sizzling cuisine is often laden with New Mexico's signature chile sauces in red and green; however, as the state's largest city, it also dishes up plenty of international cuisine, craft beer, wine and spirits. The Duke City is also a high-flying metropolis that dazzles visitors in the first week of October with the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The Albuquerque Balloon Museum is open year-round.
Start your visit off with a tour of Old Town, the epicenter of Albuquerque. This 10-block neighborhood is a living tribute to the city's Native American and Spanish heritage. Browse the art galleries housed in centuries-old adobe structures and stop by the stunning San Felipe de Neri Parish, the city's oldest building.
If your history quota isn't filled, spend some time at the Albuquerque Museum. Don't miss the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to learn about the living cultures of Puebloans. If you're looking for kid-friendly activities, the Albuquerque BioPark's four attractions, including a zoo and aquarium, are must-visits, as is Explora, a family-friendly, hands-on museum. All are on or just a couple blocks off Route 66, aka Central Avenue, one of the city's thoroughfares with enough buzzing neon to cast a nostalgic glow.
Just don't miss your chance to enjoy New Mexico's great outdoors: Devote a few hours to strolling or riding an e-bike along the multiuse Paseo del Bosque Trail that traces the Rio Grande or relishing the views from the Sandia Peak Tramway, which climbs to the Sandia Mountains' peak. The city is also a perfect jumping-off point to explore New Mexico and other popular tourist cities in the state, such as Santa Fe, which makes a convenient daytrip.
