Our love story might seem ordinary at first glance. We met in a way many others do, fell in love in a manner not unlike countless others, and yet, if you think about it, ours has a touch of the enemies to lovers trope—doesn’t it? It all began in late 2015. As new college students adjusting to the world of young adulthood, we found ourselves in a shared space. He was already part of the Filipino group (which later evolved to include a more international crowd), and I was the fresh recruit, eager to make friends and find my place. As we spent time together as friends, I remember thinking, I’d never see myself with him. There were qualities I initially found unattractive. Every time I passed the cafeteria, there he was, playing card games—whether it was before my classes or after. I couldn’t help but wonder, Does he not have a plan for his life? Why so obsessed with card games? Isn’t college about building your future? But as time passed and I got to know him better, I began to see a different side of him. Beneath what I initially perceived as idle habits was someone deeply thoughtful and emotionally intelligent. He had the kind of mind that could hold captivating conversations and satisfy my insatiable curiosity. My shallow assumptions were challenged, and I began to learn the importance of finding joy in the little things, like playing games. For me (Johnn), card games were a comfort, a hobby I genuinely enjoyed. College felt uninspiring, and the classes were often too easy to hold my attention. Moving away from the city and my friends to a quieter suburban life was a tough transition. Card games became my way of coping, much like how someone (Micah) finds peace in collecting pens and office supplies. Being part of the Filipino group gave me a sense of belonging, and eventually, she joined the fold. At first, I didn’t see her as someone I’d fall for. I was still reeling from a long-term relationship that had left me broken and lost. But she was a light in my darkness, a constant reminder that there was more to life than the pain I was carrying. She pulled me out of my despair, showed me how to focus on myself, and reminded me that life didn’t revolve around what I had lost. Our first date at Corner Bakery was unforgettable—it was then I realized she was someone I could trust, someone who wouldn’t abandon me. From that moment on, we supported each other through the highs and lows. Together, we grew, matured, and built a relationship that I’m proud of today. Now, as we embark on our “habang buhay” journey, we reflect on how far we’ve come. What began as an unlikely connection turned into a love story uniquely ours. It may not be perfect or grand, but it’s real, it’s us, and it’s forever.

Niel is definitely one of my closest cousins. From the road trips we took as kids with our families to every family gathering and event, we always sought each other out to cause mischief and get into trouble. We played games like Funny Show, Woodchip, Dr. Quack Quack, and the occasional beat ‘em up. Niel will always have a special place in my heart as one of my day ones. Over the years, we've grown up, but we still greet each other at parties—just not as chaotic as we used to be when we were kids.

Lorenzo is the youngest of my cousins, but he’s definitely blossomed into one of the most badass people I’ve ever met. Back in our childhood, Lorenzo would join us for sleepovers where we’d stay up late playing video games and watching anime.

Kuya Lawrence is one of the coolest people I know. Their incredible personality and pure happiness are truly something to behold. I remember looking up to them as a kid, especially when they’d play video games. I’d be envious of the games they had, like Zelda and Final Fantasy, and always wanted to play them too. Accommodations

Waikiki is the ideal place to stay, as it serves as the heart of downtown Honolulu and a prime destination for tourists. The area boasts a wide selection of hotels within walking distance of each other, making it convenient for accommodations. Additionally, Waikiki offers an abundance of dining options and easy access to the beach, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the island experience. However, keep in mind that the venue is approximately a 45-minute drive from Waikiki, so plan accordingly for transportation and travel time.

Directions to Ka'ala Vista

Step-by-Step Guide: 1. In your Maps app, enter a search for “Kaukonahua Rd and Farrington Hwy”. 2. This will lead you to our road’s flashing red light intersection and Yellow Gate.

3. Once you're in, continue straight ahead, passing the first stop sign. 4. You’ll come upon an open green gate and a cemetery on your right. Drive through the green gate and take an immediate left. Once through the Green Gate, PLEASE DO NOT EXCEED 15 mph -- there are children and livestock on this road. 5. Continue straight to the end of the road, where you’ll reach Ka’ala Vista, the last property on the street. You'll see two large brown houses and an aluminum gate. 6. Once you arrive, please drive to the end of the road and turn around at the aluminum gate, so your car is facing back down the road.

Parking

1. Please parallel park along the fence line closest to the property, ensuring your car is facing back down the road for easier departure, especially in the dark. 2. DO NOT PARK on the grassy area across the road, as this is not part of the Ka'ala Vista property.

One of the best hotdogs I’ve ever had—definitely a must-try with the pineapple mustard.

Hula Dog Kuhio

Cheap and delicious—when you think of Hawaiian food, you’ve got to think of spam musubi and onigiri, and this place offers that and more. Not only is it affordable, but it’s dangerously addictive. I could easily eat 2 or 3 of these and be full, and if you know me, you know I can eat A LOT! At just $2 each, it’s a no-brainer. One word of advice: this place fills up fast in the morning, so I recommend ordering online to save yourself the hassle.

Musubi Cafe IYASUME

This is a spot that Micah and I always make sure to stop by on every Hawaiian trip. No trip to Hawaii is complete without tasting this golden nectar—pineapple cane juice. It's refreshingly cold, with a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. Under the hot sun, it’s the kind of drink that can cure a heatstroke.

Hiking Trails

The Koko Head hike consists of climbing 1,048 steps to the top of the Koko Head Crater. While this hike will test your endurance, you will be rewarding with some of the best views of the island. You can see Aina Haina, Sandys Beach, and a large portion of the south shore. This is one of the best spots on the&nbsp;Island for both sunrise and sunset! Also Johnn almost died here. lolololol No entrance fee, no parking fee, no reservations needed.

Koko Head District Park

The trail to the summit of&nbsp;Lē‘ahi was built in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system. The 0.8 mile hike from trailhead to the summit is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet as it ascends from the crater floor. The walk is a glimpse into the geological and military history of Diamond Head. Parking is from 6am-6pm. There is a parking fee of $10 and an entry fee of $5. Reservations may be made up to 30 days in advance. Because the park gets busy at certain times during the day and may sell out, please book your reservations as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Diamond Head Crater Trailhead

The trail to Waimea Falls is about 3/4 of a mile and takes approximately 30 minutes. It is paved the entire way, with gentle hills. There are several gravel paths off the main corridor, for more adventurous walkers to explore all our botanical garden collections. Swimming at Waimea falls is dependent on daily waterfall conditions. Lifeguards make the swim call for the day at 9am. There will be an admission fee of $25.

Beaches

One of the most beautiful beaches on the island the only caveat is you will have to park about 5 to 10 mins away as parking there has been prohibited. Also quick fact this is the best mans favorite beach.

Lanikai Beach

This is personally my favorite beach in the world so far. The way the sun meets the horizon, causing the water to glisten with the most beautiful reflections, is absolutely mesmerizing. The warm, soft sand and the calming breeze only add to the magic. You’re sure to fall in love with this place. Caution: Waves can get high during high tide—think 2 or 3 Johnn’s height!
