Our love story began at a networking event in Spring of 2016, Michael was quirky, boisterous, outgoing, cocky, pleasantly annoying--basically a male version of Kassie. Between the two of us there was no instant attraction whatsoever. But we were were naturally drawn to each other in an instant friendship. We exchanged Facebook friend requests as if we'd been old pals.Our conversations always flowed naturally and felt at ease. I suppose that the lack of romantic intentions on either of our part helped ease our friendship into the bliss.

Our first outing in the Summer of 2016 was a platonic "double date" with mutual friends. Really just 4 single friends on a random outing but we joked the entire night about the double date concept. Kassie remembers rebuffing flirtatious dialogue from the other guy friend and naturally being drawn back to her future lover's side. Still nothing romantic piqued any of our interests.

In the Summer of 2017 Kassie went to the emergency room feeling nauseous. Good ole Facebook just initiated a feature that captured your "nearby friends" and Michael saw that she was in the area wanted to link up after his side gig was over. When Kassie told him she was in the hospital he rushed to her side. Guys, Kassie was looking a hot mess. Liiike total hot mess. But you know what--because she still thought of him in the platonic sense, she didn't care and moved with confidence and ease. Kassie mentioned she was moving in September and Mike promised to come over and help.

He came over that Sunday and something clicked. We shared a bottle of red wine and I expressed my delight in the intricacies of the flavors and notes--he chimed in rhythm and that's when the lightbulb went off.Right under my nose. This whole time???Instantly, I started getting nervous, butterflies, sweat. OMG Do I really like this guy? We've been friends for nearly 2 years and its taken me this long to realize he could be The One?That late summer Sunday in 2017 we shared our first kiss and it was magical. Our lives and worlds have collided perfectly ever since.

Our Story

Bride

Kassie Edwards is a Curatorial Research Assistant at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History &amp; Culture in Washington, DC, and serves as Fundraising Chair on the Board of Directors for the DC Rape Crisis Center. She has been interviewed by CBS, BET, FOX, and WaPo as an advocate for victims of sexual assault spreading awareness that creates a culture of consent. In 2016, she received the PGCSIF's 40 Under 40 award and the Zella Holbert Alumni Award from her alma mater, Washington Adventist University. Bronx-born with Jamaican roots, Kassie calls St. Petersburg, FL her hometown where she went to High School with bridesmaids, Chanelle and Heather. After graduating in 2010 from Florida State University with a bachelor's in African American Studies, Kassie pursued a museum education career in Rhode Island, where she met her Matron of Honor, Jalisa. She then moved to the DC Metro area to further her career at the Smithsonian where she met fellow Jamerican, Sue-Ann Arboine at her home church, Restoration Praise Center. In her spare time, Kassie enjoys throwing fancy dinner parties for her friends, writing poetry, watching CNN with her future husband, and playing board games with her Bonus Kids.

The Bride Squad

ATLien born with Grenadian roots, Jalisa Holness is a wife, mother, and a certified Project Manager at Booz Allen Hamilton. Kassie met Jalisa at Lincoln, RI SDA Church in 2011 while Jalisa pursued her bachelor’s in business administration at Bryant University. Jalisa and Kassie share a love of God, brunch, karaoke, dressing up, and anything Caribbean.

Heather Shoemaker’s friendship with Kassie began at Pinellas Park Middle School and Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Whether they were goofing off in the PPMS chorus room or feeding squirrels Hot Cheetos in the park behind the school, they always found ways to have a good time! Over the years, Heather moved from state to state and coast to coast, and it’s absolute fate that she and Kassie ended up in the DC area together again as adults. It’s wonderful  that their friendship has stayed strong, despite the years and distance apart after high school. Heather counts herself lucky to have such a true and steadfast friend in Kassie, and she’s honored to be her bridesmaid!

Florida born with Jamaican roots, Sue-Ann Arboine is a Certified Diabetes Educator @ the National Institute of Health.  Sue-Ann loves community service, is an avid anime watcher, and travels as often as possible. She and Kassie met each other at church and worked together in ministry for a few years. They are also fluent in snark-casm.

Tennessee born, Chanelle Hunter-Barnes is a 34-year-old  Registered Nurse, military wife, and mother to two boys ages 10 and 13. After graduating from UMUC with a BSN in 2015, Chanelle started her nursing career at a Hematology/Oncology clinic. She currently cares for patients in the Pre-Op/Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at an ambulatory surgery center. Chanelle moved to Florida when she was 12 years old and met Kassie in the 9th grade at Lakewood High School and the two have been best friends for over 20 years. They share a love of listening to music and stuffing their faces.

Born in Washington, DC, with Thai roots, Michael Ruxsaksriskul is a Marine Corps veteran who served with 3rd MAW MAG-11 in San Diego which served as the setting for the movie, Top Gun. In 2003, Rux was deployed in Kuwait as part of operations Enduring Freedom II and received an expeditionary ribbon and good conduct medal. During his service he helped pilot a new short wave range satellite communication program as part of a joint operation. Currently, Rux is a published cloud engineer at Ventech Solutions. He is a wonderful full-time father to five beautiful children: Tatiana, Selah, Ju'Leah, Rhema, and Mikai. In his free time, he enjoys traveling the world, playing video games, and listening to Drake.

The Groom Goons

Dedrick is a native of NC. He is a single father to a 13-year-old entrepreneur and author. He and Michael connected in a Facebook Group in 2014. They hit it off because they’re both long winded and intelligent single fathers. They met in person in 2015 and discovered that they’re actually cousins.

Gene was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and is an architect in Washington, DC. He met Mike through his friend Kassie and the two have been bros ever since.

The Arab Boss was Born and raised in the Big VA. Mounzer is a Tech Guru and Entrepreneur that works at Buildinary. He enjoys Rock Climbing, Fitness, Business Startup Ventures, Traveling The World, Playing Chess, and Making Memories. Mounzer and Michael have been friends since elementary school where they both took an interest in computers just as the tech era was taking off. Michael was famous for his collection of family-owned Birds which earned Michael the nickname "Bird". Michael and Mounzer enjoyed many childhood memories together with his Bird's and on the streets just being guys.

Born in New York with Puerto Rican and Italian roots, Mikey moved to Virginia at the age of 16 and never left where he settled with his family at Ivy St home in Arlington. Mikey made some awesome homies, like Mounzer who was his first friend and then met Michael.  They grew up playing video games playing sports and other shenanigans as juveniles that we have learned lessons from. Now a ticket broker, Mikey is an amazing father to two chilldren with whom he enjoys spending his freetime.  With the rest of his free time Mikey enjoys gathering with his homies for a good time.
