We highly recommend renting a car. I know the roads can be tight and that you would need to drive on the opposite side of the road, but the beauty of Ireland truly is the countryside and the best way to experience it is by driving around!
In our experience, it takes 24 hours to get used to driving on the other side of the road and then it starts to feel natural. If you do choose to rent a car, make sure you get a small automatic car.
There are other options! There are tours that depart from the cities, busses that run between the cities, or you could hire a personal driver. We don't have particular companies that we have used but are happy to request recommendations from our wedding planner - please just reach out!
We have never used a travel agency so while we aren't able to recommend someone, we do have a trick - Google! I know it sounds simple, but we largely depend on other people's experiences and recommendations when we travel internationally.
Google the destination and "travel blog." (Ex: Ireland Travel Blog) The recommended links will be different travel blogs with more of the specific recommendations of places to stay and eat as well as ideas of which areas to visit.
They give you their specific itineraries so its similar (I believe) to what a travel agency may give you but you would need to book it yourself.
You can't go wrong in Ireland, but our favorite spots are below.
- Galway - drive through the Burren on your way in or out - very unique
- Dublin - go to the Guinness Storehouse!
- Cliffs of Moher - definitely recommend saying in Doolin!
- Ring of Kerry
- Killarney National Park (Muckross Abbey and Gap of Dunloe are musts in our mind)
A few of the spots that are more off the beaten track but we have loved
- Kinsale
- Dingle Peninsula
- Kenmare
- Kilkenny - closest city to Borris!
- Mizen Head
- Aran Islands - These are three islands off the coast of the Cliffs of Moher. They each are beautiful and a great day trip when you are staying in Doolin. Definitely recommend!
Bed and Breakfasts are fantastic throughout Ireland. The hosts are friendly and the accommodations are very sweet. We have largely used AirBnB's and BnB's while traveling in Ireland. A few that we have stayed in are below!
- Daly's House B& B, Doolin
- Riverbank Rooms, Doolin
- Duinan House B&B, Dingle
- Tara Farm, Kenmare
