Đám Hỏi / Lễ Gia Tiên - Vietnamese Engagement Party

The Vietnamese Tea Ceremony, also known as Đám Hỏi, typically starts the wedding celebrations with the Ancestral Ceremony, Lễ Gia Tiên, which honors the two family's ancestors and relatives. It is considered the proper meeting of both families. The bride and groom will pay homage to ancestors, then serve Green Tea or Chrysanthemum Tea to family members as a sign of respect. Thereafter, family members will gift the bride and groom with advice and blessings for a long-lasting marriage. This ceremony symbolizes the fusion of two families with their ancestors as witnesses. The ceremony is a cornerstone of Vietnamese culture, reminding us of the importance of family ties, respect for the history of one's ancestors, and to celebrate the future family lines.

Lì Xì - Lucky Red Envelopes

The red envelope, or li xi, is used to bestow blessings of good luck and happiness upon its recipients. The color red is considered lucky in Vietnamese culture. In addition, it is customary to fill these envelopes with lucky money. Traditionally, the "lucky money" is an even amount to wish the recipient luck, health and success.

Chào Bàn - Table Greeting

During dinner service, the bride and groom greet each table to thank them for coming in a custom called chào bàn, which literally translates to a greeting table. While tables with elders are simply met with words of wisdom and cheers, tables with younger guests would tend to play short drinking games with the couples.
