Situated in the heart of the Alpilles, Saint Remy is one of the most beautiful villages in Provence, surrounded by lush green perfumed valleys. While strolling through the narrow winding streets, you will discover old fountains, shady squares and cafes, picturesque restaurants, beautifully restored old houses, and charming boutiques. Vincent Van Gogh spent the end of his life here. Staying for three days to one week should give you plenty of time to enjoy the area.

Weather:

Daily highs around 24C/75F and nighttime 12C/53F.

Sightseeing:

- Just outside of St-Rémy is Les Baux de Provence, an old village, with the Carrières de Lumières. An indoor quarry turned into one of the world's best sound and light show, it's an immersive art experience. You need to book in advance on their site.

- Arles (20 min by car) has an old city and a famous farmers market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

- Aix en Provence (50 min by car) has an old city, beautiful art museums (Atelier Paul Cézanne, Cours Mirabeau), and many great restaurants.

- Marseille (1 hour by car) to see the Mediterranean Sea, Mucem museum. You can rent a boat and visite the extraordinary Callanques (book in advance).

- Avignon, Palais des Papes, but be ready for the crowd.

- Some of the most beautiful villages of Provence and Luberon for a day trip: Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, Menerbes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin (Camus' village)...

- Abbaye Nore-Dame de Sénanque and the lavender garden.

Food and drinks:

- If you want a local institution, try the Bistrot de Paradou in the Paradou village (one daily menu). You need to book in advance.

- If you go to the Beaux de Provence after the Carrières de Lumières, try an aioli (fish and vegetables with a garlicky homemade mayonnaise) at the outdoor Hotel Reine Jeanne d'Arc. Book when arriving, then come back after visiting the old town.

- If you go to Marseille, try a Bouillabaisse (fish soup) in the Vieux Port.

- If you want to purchase something to bring back home: tapenade (with olives for aperitif), calisson (specialty candy with almonds), nougat (another specialty candy with almonds), navette (biscuit), premium olive oil (Moulin de Mouriès), lavender, provencal soaps, olive wood accessories for the kitchen…
