Our wedding will be a blend of two cultures: Persian and American. It will feature the exchanging of our vows in English, followed by a traditional Persian ceremony.
A Persian wedding ceremony is a beautiful and culturally rich tradition that dates back centuries. At the heart of the Persian wedding ceremony is the "Sofreh Aghd," a symbolic spread that serves as a focal point for the ceremony and represents various elements of the couple's new life together, including:
1. Mirror (Aayeneh): The reflection of the couple's future together.
2. Candles (Shamdan): The light and fire to ward off evil spirits.
3. Sweets and Nuts (Aajeel): The sweetness and endurance of life.
4. Coins (Sekeh): The prosperity and wealth in the couple's future.
5. Eggs (Tokhme Morgh): The fertility and prosperous family life.
6. Holy Book: Symbol of the couple's faith and spirituality. In the spirit of a blended wedding, this will be The Bible.
7. Sugar Cones (Kalleh Ghand): During the wedding ceremony, happily married female family members and friends hold the sugar cones over the bride and groom's heads, gently grinding them together. As the sugar cones rub against each other, they shower the couple with well-wishes for a sweet and joyful marriage. The act of the sugar cones grinding together is symbolic of the couple overcoming challenges and embracing the sweet moments.
8. Honey (Asal): After saying 'I do' or 'Baleh' the couple dips their pinky fingers in honey and feeds it to each other, starting their life together with sweetness.
