Two years ago, Mohamed and I connected online. After a few casual chats, we decided to meet in person. On our first date, Mohamed told me about his work—two leadership roles, driven and focused. Naturally, I asked how old he was. He had said 28 over text, but with a completely straight face, he looked at me and said, “23.” Now, what I didn’t realize is that Mohamed has a very dry sense of humor. No smile. No wink. Just silence. So I believed him. And since I was 24 at the time, I immediately wrote off the idea of dating someone younger. Even though he kept reaching out afterward, I wasn’t interested. I slowly ghosted him, replying days later with short, dry messages. Eventually, he called me out for my poor communication, and we both moved on. Life continued. I entered a relationship that wasn’t right for me, and after it ended, I decided to focus on myself, travel, and take a break from dating altogether. I booked two back-to-back trips and told myself love could wait. Then, on June 23, 2024, just three weeks after that breakup, a text came through from an unknown number: “Hey, do you want to go out again?” It was Mohamed. We started catching up. One of the first things I asked naturally was, “How old are you again?” He replied, “29 lol.” Turns out, he had been joking back then. (Still not a great joke.) We laughed about it, and Mohamed asked if we could see each other. I told him I’d be traveling and wouldn’t be free again until August. We left it at that. But fate wasn’t done. The next day, I happened to be in New York for a birthday celebration (which Mohamed didn’t know). Randomly, he texted, “Are you sure you can’t hang out today? I’ll be at this cafe in Queens.” I looked up the cafe and it was just nine minutes away from where I was already headed to drop off a friend at the airport. I smiled. What were the chances? So I went. That spontaneous decision led to our second first date. We sat together like old friends, laughing, joking, and talking as if no time had passed. We laughed about the age mix-up and realized how much timing really matters. As I got up to leave, he asked, “When will I see you again?” With a smile, I said, “Maybe in August.” Seven months later, on the first and biggest snowstorm of the year, Mohamed asked me to marry him. It was quiet, magical, and so us. Just like everything that led up to it—unexpected, perfectly timed, and filled with love.
