One of the best things to do on Mackinac Island is explore all the charming boutiques and gift shops along Main Street. From island souvenirs and cozy Mackinac sweatshirts to beachy home decor and picnic supplies, Mackinac Island shopping has something for everyone.

Pro tip: head out early to beat the afternoon ferry crowds and have the shops all to yourself!

Enjoy Mackinac Island Fudge

Tasting the famous Mackinac Island fudge is easily one of the best things to do on Mackinac Island—it’s basically a rite of passage! As you stroll down Main Street, pop into one (or a few) of the many fudge shops where you can sample different flavors before picking your favorite. It’s a sweet treat and the perfect souvenir… if it actually makes it home!

Ride A Bike Around The Island

One of the best things to do on Mackinac Island is rent a bike and cruise the 8-mile loop around the island. It’s a scenic, car-free adventure that takes you past Lake Huron views, charming woods, and even the famous Arch Rock, one of the island’s most iconic natural landmarks. Don’t forget to pack water and stop for photos along the way!

Take A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

One of the best things to do on Mackinac Island is to enjoy a charming horse-drawn carriage ride — a true signature experience. Since there are no cars allowed on the island, horse-drawn transportation is both nostalgic and practical, giving visitors a slower, more scenic way to explore this unique destination.

There are three main types of carriage rides on Mackinac Island, each offering something a little different:

1. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours:
This is the most popular option for first-time visitors! These group tours are a fantastic way to see the island’s highlights. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and depart on a first-come, first-served basis — no set times, just hop on the next available carriage once you’ve purchased your ticket at the office.

COST: $44/adult, $17 for kids (5–12)
$17 for dogs over 35 lbs. Small dogs ride for free.

2. Drive-Your-Own Carriage with Jack’s Livery Stable:
Ready for something a little more hands-on? Jack’s Livery Stable offers a unique experience where you can rent a private carriage and drive yourself around the island. After a short lesson, you’re off to explore at your own pace. No previous experience needed — the horses are calm, well-trained, and know their way around.

Two-Passenger: $120/hr
Four-Passenger: $140/hr

3. Horse-Drawn Taxi Cabs:
Need a lift to your hotel or a ride to dinner? The island’s horse-drawn taxis operate 24/7 during the summer season. These can’t be hailed like a typical cab — instead, call the taxi dispatch office and one will be sent your way. It’s a fun (and functional) way to get around.

Taxi cabs only TAKE CASH and rates vary by location and size of group.

Step Inside The Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel is easily the most iconic place to visit on Mackinac Island — and you don’t have to stay there overnight to enjoy it. Stroll the beautifully manicured gardens, treat yourself to afternoon tea, or book a reservation for dinner and dancing in the evening. Just keep in mind there’s a dress code after 6 p.m. if you plan to dine!

Visit Historic For Mackinac

It’s one of the top activities on Mackinac Island, and if you time your visit just right, you might even catch a live cannon firing!
