Our story, told by her, on our behalf:

The Year was 2012 when we met. Mordecai had apparently just moved from Congo to South Africa and didn't know any English. I wouldn't know this about him until the following year, 2013, when I first had a conversation with him in High school. According to me, this is when we met. But after a memory jog about a school trip we had in 2012, I remember our first encounter very vividly. Interestingly, I don't have a memory of a Mordecai that didn't speak English in my head.

I don't know what we spoke about that day in 2013, all I know is that as the months went by we became friends, and then he turned me into his sister. We had never seen each other as romantic partners nor did we have secret feelings for one another, we were just two friends in the same friend group. We lived our best teenage lives, beautifully filled with fish and chips outings, frequent stops at Kwa Ma'Agnes for cheap snacks, study sessions at the library, and Mordecai constantly rebuking me for acting like a boy (It happens when you only have one female friend and seven male ones. Mordecai was part of my seven).

When he moved to China for his Bachelors degree and I to Cape Town, our friendship was maintained by irregular skype calls and sometimes VPN connections for a successful Whatsapp call. At one point he made me download weChat so we could catch up. It was really frustrating because I am not a fan of setting up devices.

From how we met and where we are now, we are both stunned at how two people could know each other for nearly 10 years and not know that they would fall in love and end up married to each other - until the appointed time.

It was when Mordecai moved back to Congo, after completing his degree, that we started speaking more frequently. At one point I had him in my ear piece the whole day, over a Whatsapp call, even though we were not speaking that much. He went about his work and I carried on with my own, only speaking to explain a task we were stuck on or to share something interesting that was happening around us. For almost two years, our relationship (this time romantic) was maintained by these calls. Google Teams even limited how long we could stay on a call together 😂

It has been an interesting journey, from beginning to now...
