There are three airports that service the DC-Maryland-Virginia area:
Baltimore Washington (BWI), located near Baltimore, Washington
Washington National Airport (DCA), located near Washington, DC
Dulles International Airport (IAD), located in Dulles, Virginia.
All three are connected to the DC area by efficient public transportation options, so no matter which airport you fly into, you will be able to get where you are going!
If you're planning to come early and enjoy DC: You can use public transportation to get into the city (more information below)! All three are great options - so pick one that is the perfect combination of comfortable and cost-effective.
If you're cutting it close on time: You might need to skip the city and head straight to Ellicott City, Maryland -- this will probably require a car. Flying to BWI will be your best bet! This also applies if you're leaving immediately after the celebration - you'll be closest to BWI.
To summarize -
Baltimore Washington International (BWI) is located closest to Baltimore, Maryland and to the Celebration itself.
Washington National Airport (DCA) is closest to DC and, if you're coming early to celebrate or staying late to sightsee, is the closest to DC. It may be a little pricier though!
Dulles International Airport (IAD) is in Virginia, but is still a great option to get to DC and then springboard to Maryland to attend the wedding!
No matter which airport you fly into, you should utilize the great public transportation available in the DMV to get to DC!
From BWI:
There are two train options to get to DCA from BWI, the Amtrack and the Marc.
To access either you will want to take a free shuttle bus from BWI to the Marc/Amtrak Station. You can buy your train ticket either online ahead of time using the links above, or at the kiosks at the station. Both trains will take you to Union Station, where you will transfer to the Metro (more info on the Metro below!).
Hot tip: Amtrack tends to be a bit faster, but more expensive. So pick your train accordingly.
From IAD:
You will want to take the silver line on the metro to get into DC! More information on using the Metro below.
From DCA:
Congrats - you're in DC! Use the Metro to get around (more info below).
The WMATA is the most reliable public transportation option in the DC area.
The public transportation option on Google Maps is usually the best way to route your trip in DC, but if you want to check out a map of the DC metro ahead of time you can find it here.
The most convenient way to ride the metro is by adding a WMATA card to your phone by clicking "Add to Wallet," "Transit Pass," and searching "Washington, D.C." in the wallet function of your phone.
If you don't want to add a SmartTrip card to your phone, you can purchase a metro card using the kiosks at any metro station.
If you plan to get to the wedding venue on your own, you might need to rent a car!
If you are heading to the wedding after spending some time in DC, let us know! We will be looking into options to get everyone there without the need for each group to rent their own car.
That being said... Maryland isn't super public transportation friendly so expect to need a car or uber for your Maryland time.
