The "Blind" Date

Where to begin? Jake and Morgan first met on a "blind" date (we'll get to that later) on November 2nd, 2017, set up by Jake's high school friend and Morgan's roommate at the time, Raegan.

Over dinner, painfully awkward blind date conversation ensued (Jake asked Morgan if she liked plants and her favorite weather and Morgan talked about veganism). They got to know each other more as nerves wore off and enjoyed a lovely night on the patio at Grandview's The Chocolate Factory.

The Fire and Velvet Situation

Jake and Morgan went on their second date in mid-February where Jake offered to cook her Fire and Velvet pasta, a favorite of his. Of note, this recipe calls for sour cream, milk, and hot chorizo sausage. If you recall, Morgan was a vegan at the time of their first date. Unbeknownst to Jake, his parents Susie and Scott knew about this since, after getting Morgan's full name out of Jake, they found a Facebook photo of her holding up a "Everything Vegan" cookbook from Christmas.

Panic amongst Susie and Scott followed, as they didn't know how to tell Jake this without letting on that they had also Facebook-stalked Morgan... and had told their whole family about her, including Jake's grandpa Charlie.

As Jake cooked, the sausage plopped into the pan, and Jake blurted out "Oh shit, you're a vegan!" which Morgan laughed off, eventually eating and enjoying an entire bowl.

After that evening, Susie and Scott phoned Charlie who asks "well...did she eat it?"

"She's a Keeper"

After a series of dates and getting to know each other's quirks, Jake and Morgan became official on March 17th, 2018 (lucky them). Three days after they started dating, they had their first kiss on the Main Street Bridge and exchanged "I love yous" on April 7th, 2018.

Around that time, Jake's grandpa Charlie was becoming more acutely ill, and he debated asking Morgan to come with him to visit Charlie with their family one last time so early into their relationship -- but he knew if he didn't, he'd regret it. They made the trip to Akron and Morgan got to know Jake's grandparents and spent time with Jake's extended family.

As they left, exchanging goodbyes for the last time, Charlie gave Jake a nod of approval and later told Susie,"she's a keeper."

So About That Blind Date...

About 5 months into dating, Morgan had to get something off her chest... The truth was, she and Jake were not total strangers on their first date.

In October of 2015, they both attended a Young Life party where Morgan spotted Jake across the room talking to Raegan. At the time, she sported an unfortunate haircut and was wearing a groutfit, so she only introduced herself to him briefly before disappearing. But Morgan couldn't stop thinking about Jake. She told Raegan she thought he was sweet, and thought about how she'd love to get to know him but kept these thoughts to herself for two whole years.

In October of 2017, she asked Raegan if she thought Jake would be open to a blind date. Raegan reached out to Jake, he said "go for it" and the rest is history. She didn't tell Jake about this until they were well into dating because she thought it would make her seem creepy but Jake thought it was incredibly flattering.

Year One

During Morgan and Jake's first year dating, they went to both of Morgan's parent's weddings. Jake had only been able meet Michelle, Morgan's mom once before she got married but they had a wonderful time together and Terry, Morgan's step dad, gave Jake his blessing the night of his wedding. That November, Morgan's dad also got married and Jake got to meet and spend time with the Cooley half of Morgan's family. It was during that year that Morgan found out she would be moving to Dayton for medical school...

Long(ish) Distance

"Dayton and Columbus are only an hour away from each other, how bad could the distance be?" Oh, you thought wrong. Even though many people are in way longer distance relationships, Morgan and Jake felt the challenge early on after she moved to Dayton, but they persevered and made it a priority to see each other at least once a week.

In the fall of 2019, they also welcomed their first child into the world when they found a stray cat underneath a car on a cold night. They took him in and named him Mordecai.

1758 King Ave

During Morgan's 4th year of medical school, she, Jake and Mordecai made the jump to move in together. They moved in to an apartment previously rented to Jake's former bandmate. Though the commutes to Dayton were long, they loved each other so much, their time together at home made it all worth it. They saw each other and their cat as a family and enjoyed building their lives together, for each other. In March of 2023, Morgan found out that she matched into OB/GYN residency in Cincinnati. Neither of them had ever lived in Cincinnati (an Jake had never lived outside of Columbus). Though the prospect of moving to a new town, finding new friends, and starting a new career was scary, they were willing to take their relationship to a new level and grow together.

Del Mar Dog Beach

After Morgan graduated medical school, Jake and Morgan took a vacation out to California. On their first night in San Diego, Jake recommended they go to dinner at Poseidon, a nice restaurant with a sunset bar in Del Mar. Morgan was surprised to hear Jake found a reservation at 6:30PM that day since the restaurant usually takes months to book. Jet lagged and fatigued from being up since 3AM, they decided to go to Del Mar dog beach before their reservation. After they made their way up the cliffside to the garden overlooking the beach, Jake went to ask a couple nearby for a photo. As he approached the couple, he said "don't freak out, I'm about to propose, can you take a video?". After thinking they were just posing for a photo, Morgan turned and found Jake on one knee and he popped the question. She obviously said yes and they spent the rest of their vacation on an "engage-moon".
