How did Colin and I meet...now this is a good story that will go down as one of the best pickup moves of all time.
In April of 2021, I was with some teammates and Colin was with a couple of buddies. In a pretty crowded room with many side conversations going on, we locked eyes when we were both scanning the room. We looked at each other for a few seconds before I looked behind me, thinking that he had saw someone that he knew standing in my vicinity. I turned back to look again at this handsome stranger still looking in my direction.
And then, the infamous pickup move...
Colin pointed at me from across the room, and motioned for me to come over!! I immediately shook my head, declining his gesture. He chuckled to himself, and then proceed to wave me over a second time! At this point, I told myself "why not." If anything, this makes a good story to tell in the locker room tomorrow. I told my teammates to keep an eye on me and that I would be right back.
Now let me paint the picture of what I was walking up to... A tall handsome blonde with a mustache and a Hawkeye shirt on. As an Iowa State student-athlete at the time, the first words that I said to Colin was, "What do you think you're doing wearing a shirt like that in Ames?" I guess I wasn't too upset about the Hawkeye shirt because here we are today! :)
We hit it off right away and Colin asked me out on a coffee date the following week. We struggled to find a time that worked with both of our schedules. Colin happily suggested we get coffee at 6am, which was before he started work and before I had class. At first I thought that Colin was joking, suggesting 6am! For those of you who know Colin, this is no surprise because he is the earliest bird I have ever met. I on the other hand, enjoy a little more rest. But, once again I told myself, "why not."
The morning of, while still in bed, I texted Colin at 5:30am, just to make sure that I was not getting stood-up. He promptly texted back and said he was already on his way to the coffee shop. Once we both sat down at the Burgies Coffee shop in south Ames, time flew by. There were a lot of laughs and a lot of smiles and I guess I can say that the rest is history! :)
