Cabo Verde: An Archipelago off the West Coast of Africa

"Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left."

The island of Sal

Sal is the island where Hernany grew up and where we have chosen to celebrate our wedding. It is know for its miles of white sand beaches and bustling tourism. During the island tour we plan on exploring every wonder this beautiful island has to offer.

Below is a brief history about the island:

"The island of Sal was first known as LLANA or PLANA meaning "flat'. It was given its present nome when a lagoon in a crater of an extinct volcano was discovered and in this place, after the rains, salt was produced. This crater is now known as PEDRA DO LUME.

Practically uninhabited and used only for grazing animals by the neighbouring population of BOA VISTA, it was only when salt was discovered that Sal began to grow in importance and, in fact, salt became its main export right up until the middle of this century.
With a strong contribution from Italy and the recognition that a fueling point for flights to South America was necessary, the International Airport was built in 1939. As a result, quite a large internal migration took place, particularly from S.Nicolau to Sal. This factor made possible the construction of the tourist complexes, which for the last 20 years have been growing, particularly in SANTA MARTA, the region where the old salt pits were. The main attraction of this area are the magnificent beaches and sea and the excellent conditions for practicing water sports."

Cell Phone Service

Wondering how you will have cell phone service in Cabo Verde, here are the steps to making it happen:

1. Contact your carrier a month prior to unlock cell phone for international use.

2. Most carrier will send you an email once the process is complete.

3. After phone is unlocked you are all set to use cell phone in Cabo Verde.

4. When you arrive to Cabo Verde, purchase a sim card from one of the two telephone companies (CV Telecom, or T+). They will give you options for minutes/ internet. I suggest getting just internet and using Whatsup App or Viber to call other people. The minutes are used up very quickly.

5. Take out your American sim card (put it in a safe place) and insert new sim card. You will be prompted by your phone on what to do next. *you may need to connected to WIFI during this process.

6. TIP #1: disable GPS

TIP #2: disable internet when not using cell phone

*This will help to conserve megabytes.
