Driving to the san juan islands

Overview:

Anacortes is going to be your destination before boarding the ferry, as it is where the ferry takes off. Once you have arrived in Anacortes, you’ll purchase a round-trip ticket to Friday Harbor, which is the only ferry terminal on San Juan Island. After disembarking the ferry, Roche Harbor is a short, 20-minute drive through rural farmland and forests.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR DRIVING:

Ferry reservations are extremely recommended as they are free and guarantee you a spot on the ferry. You do not want to be on standby for the ferry as June is peak season, and many cars will be waiting in line. We have heard from locals that cars without reservations can wait 4+ hours for the ferry. Ferry reservations are released two months before the summer season (around April 16, 2025) and another smaller batch 2 weeks before the sailing date, so be sure to book your reservations months in advance!

Click here to be directed to the Washington State Ferry Website to book your ferry reservation

Be sure to check the ferry schedule to find out what options you have for the trip over to the island.

Directions:

1. Map directions from your starting point to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal (about 1 hour 45 min drive from Seattle).

2. Board the ferry to Friday Harbor. Enjoy the scenic ride (1 hour - 1 hour 45 mins depending on the ferry).

3. Map directions from the Friday Harbor ferry terminal to Roche Harbor’s check-in area, about a 20-minute drive.

Keep in mind that you don’t want to miss the boat, so be sure to make reservations and show up about 45-60 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

*Alternative option: During the summer months, many people decide to drive to the Anacortes ferry terminal, park at the terminal, and then walk on to the ferry.
