Nate and Shelby met through a dating app and bonded over a shared love for hiking, the outdoors, and sunrises. During their first date at a local restaurant, Shelby did most of the talking. Thankfully, that didn't deter Nate. Their second date was only a couple days later — a sunrise hike at Mount Waldo in Frankfort. Nate made Shelby instant coffee at the summit and they watched the sun come up together on a cold morning in early March 2021. By the end of the month, they were inseparable.

On February 22, 2025, Nate proposed to Shelby at Mount Waldo, almost four years after their first sunrise hike together. He intended to propose at sunrise, but got his truck stuck in the snow in their driveway. Thanks to their friends Mike and Katie, they got pulled out and made it to the viewpoint right after the sun had come up. Nate asked Shelby to marry him, but before saying "yes," she said "are you sure?"

And here we are today — she's glad he was sure.
