And that's how I met your mother. Wait, you're not my kid. Let me start from the beginning.
It all began when Nick and Katherine’s fathers, Roger and Brian met in organic chemistry class at Ferris State University. They became close friends and continued this friendship as they grew their families. Nick and Katherine met each other as friends, going on yearly summer family vacations around Up North, Michigan. Nick and Katherine grew close enough to talk to each other when they needed to or had anything interesting come up in their lives.
While their lives diverged in college, Nick went from Chicago to back home in Grand Rapids to start his career as an engineer. Katherine found herself graduating from pharmacy school in Findlay, Ohio and beginning her residency at the Veteran Affairs in Battle Creek. With Katherine also living on the west side of Michigan and both starting their careers, they found it a good opportunity to reconnect. They bonded over hiking trips at state parks, eating really good tacos at a questionable gas station restaurant, and watching Whitecaps baseball games. After Nick planned a date for the museum and a baseball game, the two found themselves in something bigger than what they started.
After growing close and falling in love, Nick knew it was the perfect time to ask the question. He got the ring, now he just needed to get it on Katherine's finger. And he came up with how to do it.
Nick coordinated with Katherine's friend and coworker Katie to make a nail appointment for a Friday afternoon in February. That same evening, Nick planned a group outing to a Griffins hockey game downtown. Meg and Adrian, conveniently "forgot" something in the car on the way. Then, Nick got down on one knee and asked Katherine that one, very important question. Meg and Adrian took pictures from afar, Chris and Jacie surprised Katherine with flowers.
With Nick and Katherine on the Blue Bridge where they shared their first kiss, the stage was set and their story continues.
