San Diego and La Jolla have so much to offer; things to do, places to eat, & sights to see. Here are a few of our favorites. Enjoy, we cant wait to see you!
Sunny Jim's Sea Cave is the only sea cave in California that is accessible by land. The old wooden staircase leading into the cave is actually inside of the Cave Store on Coast Blvd. in the Village of La Jolla.
La Jolla Cove is small but packs a punch. There’s a little beach here for sunbathing and swimming flanked on both sides by rocky points where sea lions and birds hang out. The combination of wildlife and beach, as well as an easy entry into the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park near the sea caves, makes this a must-visit on a trip to La Jolla, California. If tides are low, small tide pools reveal themselves here, too.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has a La Jolla branch on Prospect Street in a building that was the former home of local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. The ocean views from here are spectacular, as is the contemporary art collection. Be sure to check the schedule in case a free public tour other similar event is happening.
This is a great choice for a casual lunch, family dinner, or group outing. Puesto is an artisanal Mexican La Jolla restaurant that offers a little more of a full-service feeling.
The colorful atmosphere keeps things fun and cosmopolitan, and the menu is a great combo of light starters and classic tacos. All the while, you can watch your fabulous food being made fresh through the open kitchen.
Ask for blue corn tortillas, which are gluten-free, and they have a robust plant-based menu. Pair a variety of craft margaritas with your great food. They’ve recently expanded their patio seating.
Located across from La Jolla Cove, each of its three levels has a different theme and menu.
Ocean Terrace, on the rooftop, has pretty ocean views and more casual dining (we love it for lunch with a view); Level2 is more of an upscale bar with outstanding craft cocktails and a happy hour; and on the bottom floor, California Modern offers a fine dining menu with an emphasis on tasting menus including the exclusive 12-14 course experience called TBL3 (reservations required as this privilege is for one table per night).
Make a reservation, especially during peak season in the summer.
Located in the La Plaza shopping center at the corner of Girard Ave and Wall Street, Catania delivers higher-end Italian in a relaxed atmosphere with a nice outdoor terrace that overlooks La Jolla’s downtown.
Their menu offers everything from decadent dishes to crowd-pleasers like their wood-fired pizzas. Fun fact: They are known for their specialty meatballs.
Serving breakfast & lunch all day, this spot gives all the classy brunch vibes overlooking the ocean. The menu is packed with everything from French toast and fluffy omelets to fish tacos.
"I've never had a better crab cake in my life" - Stacey Hall Stenseth, Matron of Honor
The whole concept is land and sea, surf and turf, steak and seafood - need I say more?
Inspired by the foods and spirit of Hawaii, Duke’s is a fun place for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunching. The Aloha vibes are only made better by the incredible ocean view from the patio. It’s a mix of traditional Hawaiian and contemporary Californian fare, so you’ll find quality no matter what you’re craving. And, they have the famous Hula Pie.
In La Jolla, Prospect Street, with its boutiques and art galleries, is known as the Rodeo Drive of the San Diego area, but its intersecting streets like Girard Avenue and Ivanhoe Avenue also hold some shopping gems worth checking out.
Catch a Padres game at Petco Park an incredible stadium located in downtown San Diego in the Gaslamp district. The Padres will be playing Tampa Bay the weekend of June 16th-18th.
The world-famous San Diego Zoo is an absolute treat for all ages and should definitely be on your itinerary if you’re visiting the city for the first time.
Its reputation for being one of the best zoos in the world is well-deserved. More than 3,500 animals representing 650 different species call the zoo home, and visitors can also see 700,000 plant species on the zoo’s 100-acre property. The San Diego Zoo is a leader in conservation research and species preservation, and their beautiful open-air, cageless exhibits are the perfect way to appreciate wild creatures up close.
We recommend that you spend a whole day exploring the zoo, but it is possible to enjoy a half-day here.
Visiting the USS Midway Museum is truly one of the most interesting things to do in downtown San Diego. The USS Midway was one of America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers in the 20th century (1942–1992) and is now a floating aircraft carrier museum that is docked permanently in the San Diego Bay along the popular downtown Embarcadero waterfront area.
At 4,235 acres, Mission Bay is the world’s largest human-made aquatic park. The saltwater bay is connected to the Pacific Ocean by a channel that allows boats and yachts access to the bay’s many protected marinas.
This is the biggest San Diego water sports hub. Here, you can experience everything from kayaking to hot tub cruising to jet skiing.
