On January 14, 2017, both Michael and Nicoletta attended the birthday party of a mutual friend - Matt Casalaina. A live band was playing at a bar on the Upper East Side and they met on the dance floor, unaware they were there for the same party. After drinks, dancing, and some conversation they realized they were both friends of Matt and made plans to see each other again. Michael, who was in his last year of medical school, traveled two hours each way from his home in Central Jersey to visit Nicoletta every day he had off. Quickly, March approached which would bring Michael’s residency match reveal. He interviewed at a number of NYC hospitals but there was a chance he could be placed anywhere from Chicago to Miami. Nicoletta (and Michael’s mother) prayed that he would stay close by. Their prayers were answered and Michael matched at Mount Sinai’s surgical residency program located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Michael and Nicoletta dated for two and a half years before he asked Nicoletta to spend an afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (one of their favorite date spots). He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Four weeks later they moved into their first apartment together on the Upper East Side just a few blocks from the Met.
