On the day they became engaged they already had a reason to celebrate. It was Charlie's birthday, July 20th. They went on a late afternoon boat ride in the Pamlico River. Charlie informed Nikki, after the boat had cut off, they had run out of gas. They sat in the boat drifting in the middle of the river until Charlie pulled out a little black box. Charlie asked Nikki if she knew what it was to which she replied she did not. He opened the box to reveal a square cut white gold diamond ring. Nikki was overjoyed and after she was asked to marry Charlie she of course said YES! They then went back to the boat ramp, the boat really had not run out of gas, and celebrated with family at a restaurant in Washington, NC.
