Things to Do

Shelf Road Trail

Shelf Road Trail, Ojai CA
Shelf Road in Ojai’s Valley View Preserve is a scenic, unpaved trail that traverses the cliffs above the Ojai Valley, offering great views. The main trail itself is often described as easy to moderate, however, when including loops or longer trails, such as the Shelf, Gridley, Fuel Break, and Pratt Trails Loop, the hike can be considered moderately challenging. We recommend the trailhead off Gridley Road.

The River Bottom

Oso Trailhead - Ventura River Preserve, Ojai
Officially called the Ventura River Preserve, there are many trail heads that lead to the river bottom. We recommend the Oso Trailhead off Meyer Road. Wear comfortable shoes and expect uneven ground.

The Beach

Rincon Beach Park
There are many beaches about a 20-30 minute drive from Ojai; Marina Park, Harbor Cove, and Solimar to name a few! But one of our favorites is what locals call Bates Beach (officially named Rincon Beach Park). Bates Beach is at the southern tip of Carpinteria.

Bart’s Books in Ojai is unlike any other bookstore—you browse under the open sky, surrounded by charming shelves built into the walls of a Spanish-style house and even spilling out onto the sidewalks. Founded in 1964, it’s the world’s largest outdoor bookstore, where you can wander through winding aisles of new and used books, relax in cozy courtyards, and even buy a book from the honor-system shelves outside after hours. The mix of history, character, and community spirit makes Bart’s Books a one-of-a-kind destination for book lovers and curious visitors alike.
