HOW WE MET

HER PERSPECTIVE

If you had told me that I would be going on a blind date to a fraternity event in College Station on a random Tuesday night with a boy who would one day be my husband, I would not have believed you – mostly because I promised myself I would never date an Aggie. The Lord is funny like that! It was Spring of my Sophomore year at Baylor. I remember my roommate coming to me at the very beginning of March, saying that she was going to a date event at A&M, and that her boyfriend’s Little in BYX (their fraternity) wasn’t going with anyone yet. His Little happened to be none other than John David Callaway Dugger. To no surprise, I decided to say yes! A few days later and we were heading to College Station. As we pulled up in front of the house where we were meeting the boys, I suddenly felt nervous! I hadn’t really felt that way until that moment. The door opened, and there he was – tall, blonde, and handsome. In classic Olivia fashion, I loudly said “HELLO!” and gave him a hug in an attempt to ignore the elephant in the room, which was the fact that this was for sure a scheme to get us together. Spoiler alert: the scheme worked. I had no idea what the night would look like, but it exceeded any expectation that I had! If texting my mom 1 hour into our time together saying “I think I’m kinda into him” is any indication of how quickly I fell, I’d say I was perfectly fine becoming more than friends. One week later, I got a call from JD, where he said words that I had been secretly waiting to hear since our night at the date party – “I would love to drive to Waco and take you on a date.” I can confidently say that I made the right decision going to an event with a guy that I had never met before. 2 years later and I’m marrying him!

THE PROPOSAL

HIS PERSPECTIVE

Towards the end of May, I found myself looking for the perfect proposal spot in between Waco and College Station. I’m not sure how familiar the average person is with that stretch of Highway 6, but I consider myself a pro. And let me tell you, there isn’t much there. But then I remembered a few friends telling me about this Sugarloaf Mountain outside of Hearne, an “oasis of central Texas” they said. The only problem was that the property was privately owned, and I had no idea who the owner was or how to reach him. After a few weeks, I took a group of men on a backpacking trip where I learned that not only did one of the guys live outside of Hearne, but he lived right next door to Sugarloaf! My friend agreed to help me track down the owner, but after countless unsuccessful phone calls all we had was an associated business. So, I did what any lovestruck 20 something would do — I pulled a random home address in Tomball, TX from the business's website and convinced my roommate to get in the car for a spontaneous 2 hour drive. To my disappointment, nobody answered the door . . . so I wrote a letter explaining who I was and left my phone number and email address at the bottom of the page. After a few days of waiting, not even knowing if the address was accurate, I received the call I had been hoping for, with the sweet words “I’m gonna let you do this son.” Fast forward a month, and you could find Liv and I walking up Sugarloaf together as I prepared to ask her to marry me. It was such a sweet day for us and we’re looking forward to celebrating an even more special day soon!
