I remember the first time I saw Sam. He came to the African Student Association meeting to recruit people to join his team for a business competition on campus. When I saw him, I was like "He's cute. Who is he?" Because I went to CU, I recognized every black face on campus. He was a new face. When he spoke for the first time, I knew that this man had to be Nigerian. "My name is Samuel Adewole." He's Yoruba too! Later in the evening after people made their introductions, I wanted to talk to him and help out with his business. During our conversation, I found out he was from Ondo state. What are the chances that I would meet someone from my families state in Boulder, Colorado?
He kept things business professional during the competition. After he won the competition, I didn't want him to forget about me. One thing I've always known was that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I knew that Sam's didn't have that much access to Nigerian food so I decided to make iyan with egusi and efo riro for him and his roommate. I brought my brother along to not make it seem like I was too eager. It was during that conversation that my brother clumsily reviled that I was single.
From there on, we started to get to know each other on a friendly level. It was only after my last show for the year, that we really got to know each other. The rest is history.
While I was in college, I had the opportunity to attend a program in Boulder Colorado. During my time at the program, I then learned about a business competition at the University of Colorado and I needed a CU student to join my team for me to be eligible to compete.
Sadly, I was not able to find anyone willing to join my team. It was the day of the deadline and I had already given up when my roommate invited me to the African Association meeting at CU and I reluctantly agreed to go. On getting there, the president of the association welcomed me and as I introduced myself to the group, Bunmi greeted me in Yoruba saying "Omo Yoruba ni mi" and I was blown away (like in the movies).
On seeing Bunmi for the first time, my heart skipped a beat, she was really kind and soft-spoken, I just had to get to know her. I asked her to join my team and she agreed and that's how I got her number 🙃. We kept things professional as we prepared for the competition and weeks later, we won the competition. Afterward, she asked if she could bring me Nigerian food to celebrate and I agreed. She came with her brother and brought Poundo Yam with Egusi for me and my roommate to share.
Unluckily for my roommate, I ate all of the food she brought. Don't blame me, it was too good to share. I still can't get enough of her food to this day as she remains my best chef!
