How I Met Koya

Our story started back in 2018, when I (Onanefe) moved to the U.S. and stayed with my uncle. The household I was in had one rule: attend Bible study and our congregation meetings. Simple enough—I respected it and honestly, that rule turned out to be life-changing.&nbsp;That’s where I first saw her—Koya. She was cute, but I wasn’t really focused on the younger ones at the Hall. That changed when she came up and introduced herself. She had this playful charm, and I thought to myself, Oh, she likes me. (She still claims it was just her being friendly—but deep down, I know she liked me.)&nbsp;The moment that really stuck with me happened on September 29, 2018. We were at a gathering, and I was taking a video. Koya noticed she was in the frame, smiled, and did a little twirl. That moment hit different—I started to seriously like her from then on.&nbsp;Fast-forward to 2020 and the COVID lockdown… I couldn’t stop thinking about her. One afternoon, I randomly called and told her I liked her. I said she didn’t have to respond—I just needed to say it out loud. She went quiet for what felt like forever, then finally said she liked me too.&nbsp;From there, we started talking more and getting to know each other. I honestly thought we were in a relationship already—but when I asked, she said, “We’re just friends.” I was confused. (According to the Young People Ask book, we were definitely crossing into dating territory!) She even asked me to stop calling her pet names because it made her uncomfortable. I did, but truthfully, I was caught between liking her a lot and wanting to do things the right way.&nbsp;So I sought some spiritual advice. I was reminded of a scripture that helped me reflect on whether my feelings were rooted in spiritual love or just surface attraction. That moment helped me realize I wasn’t ready to date yet. When I told Koya, she shared that she had come to the same conclusion after talking with someone she trusted. We both agreed not to pursue dating and to limit our communication for the time being—while still staying friends.&nbsp;That was a tough call for me. She handled it calmly and sweetly—but I was feeling all kinds of things. Still, I knew it was the right thing to do.&nbsp;Over time, we both grew—spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Eventually, I realized I didn’t want to date just anyone—I wanted to try again with her. I told myself that if it didn’t work out, that would be okay… but deep down, I believed she was the one I wanted as my wife.&nbsp;When we did start dating officially, it opened our eyes to what a real relationship looks like—Jehovah’s way, not the world’s way. That journey brought out insecurities I hadn’t even recognized before, especially around financial stability. But we prayed about it, and we’ve both been working hard to prepare for our future together.&nbsp;There was even a point when we took a month-long break to step back and reflect. It wasn’t easy, but that led to one of the most honest and meaningful conversations we’ve ever had. Since then, it’s been a journey of growth, love, and teamwork. We’re now both auxiliary pioneering and building a solid foundation for our marriage.&nbsp;It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve learned something important: love isn’t just a feeling—it’s something you build, intentionally, with Jehovah at the center.&nbsp;And honestly, we wouldn’t want to build it with anyone else.
