After a long week of travel, I landed in SAN and just needed a surf. I rushed back to "the cubby" and grabbed my board then hurried off to Boneyards to get a few waves in before the last bit of daylight vanished from the skyline.
October is a great time for playful sized surf and I was having a super fun session when a random stranger paddled over to comment on the fact that I had a "very pink board." We spent the next hour trading waves and laughs.
To this day, Owen will say he complimented me on a "nice wave" but we all know I have a better memory!
Whether it was an attempted smooth pick-up line or an act Captain Obvious would envy that brought us together - it was undeniably the start of an epic and amazing relationship that has taken us all over the world and now brings us to invite you to join us in celebrating our 'happily ever after' on April 24, 2022.

I knew she wasn’t the marrying type. In fact, Jodi’s parents weren’t sure she’d say “yes”, so they hesitated giving me approval for fear of getting my hopes up. But, being that we had already bought a home and had a child (Nugget) together, I figured she’d have to say “yes”. And if she didn’t, well, I was taking the dog.
The plan was to pop the question on a 3-week surf trip to Indo (Bali and Sumatra). Of course, a “no” early in the trip would’ve been, at best, awkward. So, I decided to wait as long as possible: week 3. Plus, by then, I figured she’d be surfed out and happy – a recipe for success!
Fast forward to October, 2019. After 2 weeks of surf and countless hours of planes, cars and ferries, saving the best for last, we arrived to Kandui – an island off the coast of Sumatra known among surfers as “Playgrounds” (think Disneyland for surfers, but with almost no people).
Waiting until the surf subsided, I planned a photo shoot for Jodi and I with the surf camp photographer. Little did she know, though, that the photographer was there to capture more than just a few mangrove and beach setting photos.
First stop, the rickety old bridge in the mangroves. After a few poses, we moved to the white sands of Kandui Beach – where, after yet more photos, it was time.
“Babe”, I said, “how about we hop in the dingy and get some photos over on Sand Island?”, pointing to a tennis court sized sand island 200 hundred yards away.
Minutes later, our feet touched perfectly groomed sand (thanks to the wonderful staff at Kandui) and a pathway lined with palm fronds leading to the moment of truth.
To be honest, I don’t remember what happened next, but she must have said “yes”, because there’s photos to prove it, she’s still wearing the ring and y’all have been invited to Mexico.
