Como llegar a Malinalco? • How to get to Malinalco?

Aeropuertos • Airports

🇲🇽

🇺🇸

For those traveling by air, Malinalco unfortunately (or fortunately?) doesn't have an airport you can fly into so we'll have to first get you close.

There are two major cities you can fly into; Mexico City and Toluca City. Alternatively Puebla City is not too far but it's a stretch.

Toluca City is the closest to Malinalco, only one hour away, and it is served by the "Lic. Adolfo Lopez Mateos" airport. You can search the airport as TLC when looking at flights. This airport doesn't have international flight so you'll have a connecting flight in Mexico or you can fly into San Diego, cross the border into Tijuana and hop on a direct flight to TLC. Though it is the closest to Malinalco none of the beautiful people attending the wedding live there and you will only have our emotional support. But fear not we will help in any way we can.

Mexico City is two hours away and will be the parting hub for most of us traveling to Malinalco. Mexico City has two airports, think New York City with JFK, LaGuardia and Newark but no one wants to step foot in Newark. The major international airport for Mexico City is, and you guessed it, Mexico City International Airport (look it up as MEX). It's right in the city, just like LaGuardia, and you can take an Uber to the city, bus station or to your hotel and it will not be expensive at all (15-20 USD) but avoid taking any of the taxi services from this airport as they will be much more expensive.

If you are feeling like you have gumption, you can take the subway from Terminal 1 to almost anywhere in the city for only $5 pesos (a quarter) or the Bus Rapid Transit from Terminal 2 and 1 that will take you downtown for 2USD. To use public transit such as the subway and MetroBus (Bus Rapid Transit) you will need a transit card which you can purchase at every subway station or inside the airport terminals for 1 USD.

The second airport for the city is Santa Lucia (NLU) known as "AIFA," it is a new airport north of the city, kind of like JFK, you have to take a taxi long enough to get to know your driver's blood type. Though limited, NLU does have international destinations such as Houston's IAH, McAllen MFA, and Tijuana TIJ (yes, Tijuana is in Mexico but it's only one mile from the border if you want to fly to San Diego and hop over to Tijuana).

You will have different options to get to Mexico City from NLU; a taxi, a bus (not public transportation), or a Bus Rapid Transit. The easiest way will be to take a cab, last I checked there was no Uber from the airport so you'll have to take a taxi from only an authorized taxi company (45-50 USD):

・Flex Shuttle

・Diber

・Ataxsa

・Shadai

・Zumpango Travels

・Taxal

・Taxi Viaje Seguro

・Taximar

・AMS Sanrod

You can take a bus from one of the companies providing buses directly from the terminal for around 7-12 USD one way. There are two types of buses short buses (vans) and normal buses but all the different companies will have ticket counters in the airport. You'll just need to know which part of the city your hotel or other destination is. Alternatively, you can take the bus directly to Cuernavaca (30 USD) which is only one hour away from Malinalco.

For you adventurous folks there is a third option, bless your heart if you try this one out, the Mexibus BRT system. For this option you will need a Mexibus transit card which you can purchase at the airport, the entire trip will cost around 2USD and will take 2 hours to reach Mexico City + the time to get to your final destination within. Once you have your bags follow the sign for ground transportation and then the Mexibus signs. At the station you will buy your card (with cash for $19 pesos plus add an additional $10, and $20 after that per extra person you are traveling with) and wait for the bus with "Ojo de Agua" service (the only one). Ride this bus to the last stop and you'll arrive at "Ojo de Agua," there you'll need to use your card again ($9 pesos) to transfer onto the only other bus with service to "Ciudad Azteca." Ride that bus all the way and you will now be in Mexico City at the transfer station "Ciudad Azteca" from which you can use the subway system (0.25 USD) or Uber (10USD) anywhere you'd like. If you try this method, let us know and you'll get a surprise.

NOTE: there is light rail commuter train under construction, it was supposed to be in service by the end of Q3 but the latest info has completion at 83%. If this rail system is finished before your arrival it will be best way to get to Mexico City besides taking a cab.

Which ever airport you choose you can count on one of us to help you with all the information you need to not end up in Timbuktu.

Observatorio-Malinalco

🇺🇸

Mexico City-Malinalco

This bus leaves from the "Central de Autobuses Poniente" also known as "Observatorio." Inside the bus station you'll need to find the ticket counter for Flecha Roja (Red Arrow) and purchase your tickets. The cost of a one-way ticket will be around $126 pesos (7 USD) per person.

The bus leaves from the station at 4:20 PM and 6:20 PM Monday through Friday; 8:20 AM, 4:20 PM and 6:20 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The trip will take a total of 2:20, so plan for a nap or counting to one million. The bus will have TVs where they put on movies (only in Spanish so maybe download something on Netflix). Once in Malinalco you will be dropped off only one block away from the downtown plaza.

Toluca-Malinalco

If you choose to fly into TLC there is a bus which departs from the Toluca bus station "Central de Autobuses Toluca." It is the company but these buses only have service Saturday and Sunday at 7:00AM. I recommend purchasing your tickets in advance since these buses can fill up pretty quickly (6 USD).

There is another bus departing the same station with daily service to a nearby town. Get to the station and tell the teller you want to get to Malinalco, purchase your ticket (6USD) and once you are on the bus that leaves Toluca you will need to transfer when the bus arrives at "Chalma" so no naps on this one. Ask the driver which bus will take you to Malinalco and get on that sucker (you will need cash for this bus $15 pesos), buckle up for the 15 minute ride over to Malinalco and get yourself ready to party.

🇺🇸

You can take an Uber from Mexico City or Toluca all the way to Malinalco but there will be no Uber once there. During your stay in Malinalco you can take local taxis but on your way out of the town you'll need to find a different set of wheels.

An Uber from Mexico City will be around 45-50 USD so you if you share it with 4 others you'll get all the way to Malinalco from doorstep to doorstep for the same price as the bus.

There is an Uber-like company in Mexico that is usually a little cheaper than Uber, the only difference is normally they have older cars. They have an app and it works just like Uber, the app is DiDi Rider.

Toluca-Malinalco

🇺🇸

If the bus schedules don't fit your needs, there are also shared taxis you can take to Malinalco. The taxis are small sedans with space for 4-5 peaople, you won't be the only one in the same vehicle and the taxi will depart once all its seats are full or their schedule departure is up. They leave from the same area as the "Flecha Roja" buses.

Half a block from the Toluca Bus Station is the Toluca-Tenango taxi stand (the taxis will have "Tenango del Valle" on the hood). The ride costs $23 pesos (1.5 USD) and takes 40 minutes to get to Tenango. Once in Tenango, you'll be at the corner of Ave. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Federal Highway 55, next to a "Farmacia del Ahorro." You’ll need to cross the pedestrian bridge heading east to reach the other side of Ave. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, where you'll see an Elektra store (retail store with yellow all over). Walk half a block further, and you'll find a stop for vans going to Malinalco (the fare is $35 pesos, 2 USD).

Similarly, there's another taxi station for Tenango located 5 minutes away from the other station. Next to the store "La Carredana" (corner of Pino Suárez and Tollocan), and the process will be the same. Make sure the shared taxi is heading to Tenango, cross the pedestrian bridge, and find the vans to Malinalco.

Arrange for a ride with one of the bougie people with a car, after all some of us are already family and the ones who aren't yet, will soon be family.

If you don't know who will have space in their jalopy, reach out to one of us and will gladly find you a ride to hitch.

🇺🇸 Currency

For those traveling from abroad and who are unfamiliar, Mexico's economy runs mostly on cash first and cards second. Outside of "popular" restaurants and touristy places you may find yourself without a way to pay if you don't carry cash.

You can get pesos, the local currency, at the Foreign Exchange places in the airport or use your debit card and take out money from an ATM from "Banamex," "Banorte," or "BBVA."

Exchange Rate 1 USD=18 MXN

Meal for one=100-300 MXN

Water bottle=15 MXN

Subway=5 MXN

Dinner with drinks=200-500MXN

When using a credit card, or withdrawing money from an ATM, and prompted with selection of which currency to use, either USD or MXN (usually an American flag 🇺🇸 and Mexican flag 🇲🇽) always choose the option which uses pesos for the transaction by either selecting 🇲🇽, "proceed without conversion," or "decline conversion".
