Is it worth visiting Arequipa?
Of course!
Arequipa is famous for its delicious cuisine, distinct colonial charm, and beautiful buildings made of white volcanic stone. Arequipa is also the 2nd largest city in Peru. The city is also the starting point for visiting Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world and home to one of the largest birds, the Condor.
The city is also home to a top flight soccer team, Melgar FC. If your lucky, a game might be schedule during the time of your visit. If sporting events are your thing.
The city has many beautiful churches influenced by spanish design, a large cathedral in the Main Square, and museums (one of which holds Juanita the mummy).
Can you get altitude sickness in Arequipa?
Arequipa is located at 2,335 meters (Elevation: 7,661′) above sea level, some people could be affected by altitude sickness. Thats why we recomend to stay in the city 4-5 days before the wedding day and/or going to Cuzco. If worried, there is a tea sold in Arequipa that helps relieve the affects of altitude sickness.
