Semi-Formal attire is requested. The parish has a required dress code for men and women attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Please respect the required dress code of the parish:
MEN: a button down shirt, shirt with a collar, and neat pants
WOMEN: modest neckline (no low-cut) and sleeves that at least cover the shoulders. Additionally, dresses and skirts should cover the knee when seated or standing.
Veiling for women is encouraged but not required. We ask that all guests adhere to the guidelines out of respect for the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Thank you!
WHAT IS THE LATIN MASS?
The Traditional Latin Mass refers to the Catholic Liturgy offered according to the Missal of 1962, declared "Extraordinary Form" by Pope Benedict XVI. For centuries prior to 1970, this was the way the Mass was celebrated all around the world. The priest faces the altar with the people, offering a sacrifice to God, present in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle. Except for the homily, the Mass is sung, chanted, or spoken entirely in Latin. Communion is received on the tongue while kneeling and communicants do not say “Amen.” There will be booklets in the Church that detail the Order of the Mass as well as the English translation to be used by the congregation to follow along and pray.
In the Extraordinary Form, the Rite of Marriage occurs first, then Mass begins.
WHAT IS THE FSSP?
St. Edward the Confessor Church is part of Mater Misericordiae Parish which is an apostolate of the FSSP, or the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. The FSSP is a community of priests who do not take religious vows, but who work together for a common mission in the Catholic Church, under the authority of the Pope. They were canonically erected by Pope St. John Paul II in 1988. At the heart of the Fraternity`s charism is the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass.
