Our Wedding

Our StoryOur story begins in January 2021. Alex had been invited to a birthday party with one of her best friends. This party just so happened to be at Porter’s house that he shared with one of his best friends. The second Porter saw Alex, he knew he needed to talk to her, but nerves got the best of him. Later that night, he noticed Alex standing outside in the freezing January cold while she and her friends waited for a ride. Without hesitation, Porter rushed outside and offered her his brand-new fleece-lined flannel. Alex politely declined at first, but Porter insisted. Shortly after, she was warm, and he was freezing in a T-shirt. Still, he couldn’t have been happier, because it meant he got to talk to her.When the night ended, Alex thanked him, they said goodbye, and she went home. Porter, unfortunately, did not get her number that night. Traditional at heart, he refused to message her on social media or ask one of their mutual friends for her contact information. If their story were to continue, he wanted it to do so in person, not online. Alex, busy studying for her medical school entrance exam, quickly got swept back into her studying routines. Porter, however, didn’t go a single day without wondering when he might see her again.Several months later, Porter spotted Alex again while he was working…but once more, nerves won. Then, in September 2021, destiny delivered one more chance. Porter spotted Alex the moment she walked into a bar in Norman where they had both planned to watch an OU football game with friends. Several hours later, when he spotted her heading for the door to leave, he knew he couldn’t let the opportunity pass this time. Alex and her friend told Porter that they were going to walk home. Porter, being the gentleman he is, offered to walk them home. Alex, once again, declined at first. And again, Porter insisted. Alex was easily convinced as she was flattered by his gentleman-like charm (and because she is terrified of being outside after dark). When they arrived, Alex’s living room was full of girls, which was no surprise as she lived with 10 other girls. Porter, an introvert, was overwhelmed by the large group and asked if she would take him to see their third-floor balcony.What began as small talk about the weather and view of Norman from the balcony (which was actually relatively underwhelming), turned into hours of conversation, laughter, and storytelling. Before they knew it, the sun had started to rise, and they laughed as people jogged by on their morning runs. They were astonished at how they made the entire night fly by. Several days later, Porter came to pick Alex up for their first date and was once again greeted by a large group of girls. He opened his car door for Alex, something no one had done for her before.It didn’t take long for them to become inseparable and for both of them to realize: they were simply meant for each other.RockyIn February 2022, while out on a morning run, they spotted a dog sprinting down the middle of a busy street. Without hesitation, they scooped him up and took him home. Alex instantly fell in love, and when the owner later asked if they would be willing to keep him since he continually escaped her yard. The answer was an easy yes for Alex, and Porter agreed (mostly because he knew Alex would be upset if he said no).They named him Rocky. He was wild, stubborn, and absolutely exhausting for the first year. Eventually, he settled in and became Porter’s best friend (second only to Alex, of course). Rocky now loves walks, car rides, chasing bunnies, and getting attention from both the Murry and Newton families.Growing TogetherOver the past four years, they have stood by each other through some of their most exciting, emotional, and challenging seasons. Porter has cheered Alex through 3.5 demanding years of medical school, even while living two hours apart. Alex encouraged Porter through every step of his long and difficult journey toward becoming a firefighter. While she studied late into the night for weekly exams, he trained for fire academy testing. Later, as she prepared for her board exams, Porter was working two jobs, serving his community as a firefighter and doing landscaping on his days off.Despite their hectic schedules and distance, they never stopped showing up for one another. Most days ended with a long FaceTime call, and on the days they were lucky, a drive was made just to end the night with a hug.They learned that no matter how demanding life became, having each other made everything feel possible.The Proposal &amp; What’s AheadPorter bought the engagement ring in November 2024 and proposed on December 21, 2024. Alex didn’t hesitate for a second — her answer was an immediate “YES!”They are still living with their parents for now and are counting down the days until they can start their lives together. Where they will live depends on where Alex matches for her pediatric residency in March 2026. Their hearts (along with Rocky’s and both of their families) hope it’s in Oklahoma City, but wherever they end up, they know they’ll face it the way they always have: together.
