The Manayunk Canal Towpath is just one section of the larger Schuylkill River Trail beginning at Lock Street, running behind Main Street through Manayunk, and ending in the Shawmont neighborhood. It’s approximately 2 miles of a mixed trail of boardwalk and compacted gravel that is best suited for walking, jogging, off-road biking and nature exploration. The Towpath runs adjacent to the Manayunk business district progressing into a more scenic wooded trail in Shawmont, which leads to Valley Forge. Along the Towpath, visitors will find historical signage about the industrial heritage of Manayunk and its rich canal history. Rail lines, old canal locks, ruins of the locktender's house and sluice house and old textile mills can all be seen along the trail.
Wissahickon Valley Park is our favorite escape from the city and only a short walk away. In fact, the entrance to the park can be found directly across from the Wissahickon Transportation Center on Ridge Ave (0.5 miles, or ~12 min walk).
It is a large urban park that is located in Northwest Philadelphia. It protects 2,042 acres of woodland surrounding the Wissahickon Creek
Kelly Drive is a very scenic river front path that can be easily accessed from main street, head to ridge and take the fight right after the bus stop.
This path leads to center city, passing east falls and boathouse row on the way.
Center City, Old City, Rittenhouse, and so many more interesting areas of the city await.
If you're feeling even more adventurous, affordable access to Philadelphia begins at Wissahickon Station. The SEPTA schedule is accessible via the link.
When traveling we'd recommend getting off the train at either the Jefferson or Suburban station. Jefferson station puts you closer to Old City, Chinatown, and historical sites, like Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell. Suburban station puts you closer to Center City, near City Hall, shopping opportunities, and Rittenhouse Square.
