Mark and Rachel met on a dating app. Mark was looking to find a partner after leaving the Marine Corps, and Rachel’s childhood best friend created her a dating profile so she could “get back out there.”

Their first date on February 8, 2020 was planned to be at Seaboard in Matthews, NC. Despite Rachel’s concern it would be closed after a severe thunderstorm, Mark was confident it would be open. Sure enough, the brewery was boarded up and closed when they arrived. They then rode in Mark’s "grey mustang" to Mac Speedshop where they talked for over three hours. They continued to date during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic where they enjoyed with walks with Franklin, puzzles, outdoor adventures, and cooking new recipes. Mark officially asked Rachel to be in a relationship on May 30, 2020.

Throughout the 3.5 years they dated, they supported each other throughout Mark’s return to civilian life post the Marine Corps, Rachel’s journey throughout graduate school, and various life trials. Rachel and Mark also stayed dedicated to one another as Rachel moved to Durham for her dream occupational therapy job. The distance allowed them to grow stronger and realize that their relationship was their priority. Mark proposed to Rachel upon her moving back to the Charlotte area at the Knights Stadium decorated for the Christmas season.
