The Paths We Choose

Our story begins at our shared alma mater, Humboldt State. Out of all the colleges and all the choices we could have made, we both ended up attending the same school, starting as freshmen in 2018. During the first month or so, neither of us knew each other—until we both decided to join the fencing club and happened to show up on the same day.Over the next year, we became friends. After training at the fencing club, which usually ended around 9 p.m., we often walked back to our dorms together, talking the whole way about life and sharing stories.By the end of the year, we decided to move into the Fencing Club House and rent a room there along with other fencers who were already living in the house. As another year passed, we got to know each other even better. We noticed each other’s habits, likes, and dislikes. We made lots of memories at the fencing club and formed friendships throughout 2019. For the most part, though, we still lived separate lives—we simply shared the same house to sleep in and enjoyed group dinners together.Halfway through our first semester of 2020, the pandemic hit. It upended our schooling, quarantined us at home, and separated us from our friend groups. As disastrous as it was, it left the two of us rather stuck in the same house together.That’s when the never-ending conversations began—along with an absurd number of hours spent watching anime. We talked late into the night about everything and nothing, until our eyes could no longer stay open and the sun had already begun to rise. Weeks passed, and we found comfort and friendship in each other’s presence. Eventually, a moment of tense silence broke with, “I think I like you,” from Rachel, followed by, “I think I like you too,” from Chris.Then we found ourselves in an interesting conundrum: we were living in the same house. If we were to break up, things would become incredibly awkward. Our solution was a two-week trial period. During those two weeks, we talked through every meaningful topic we thought could make or break our budding relationship. We talked about lifestyles, likes and dislikes, wants and needs. We talked about hard and soft boundaries, our goals and future careers, children and fur-babies, chores and household balance. We talked about our families, our political and religious beliefs. At the same time, we went on our first real date, which just so happened to be on St. Patrick’s Day. We picked up sushi and ate outside, talking even more.Before we knew it, two months had gone by and the two-week trial period had quietly slipped past. One night, while we were sitting in the living room, Rachel realized this and asked, “Are we dating?” Chris responded—laughing—“I think we are.” That’s when we realized we should probably tell people. And so began the introductions to each other’s friend circles and families.As time went on, our little family began to grow. Now we have two fluffy, happy cats and a little dog who never wants for anything (except constant attention). And finally, after six years of living together and loving each other every day, we have the means and support to have a wedding.

This 110.3-acre neighborhood park includes a tot lot, picnic tables,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.larpd.org/dog-parks" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">dog park</a>, restroom building, sports fields, pole barn, disc golf course and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.larpd.org/departments/equestriancoveredarena" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Equestrian Center</a>.The 4-acre fenced dog park meadow offers two water stations for dogs. It is situated between the Arroyo Creek&nbsp;and the synthetic turf field. Off-leash use is allowed only during park hours,&nbsp;except during permitted events.
