The day was Saturday, October 18th, 2018. Markus had been looking forward to the annual Oktoberfest celebration at the German American Club in Lake Worth for weeks. He and a group of his volleyball friends had long made plans to meet there as a group. They were pumped to spend the evening indulging in all the German food, beer, and dancing. Markus had made plans to take an Uber to the event with his best friend and volleyball partner, Mario, better known as Makiki.

That afternoon, Darcy texted Rachel a link to the flyer for Oktoberfest, “Should we go?” Plans soon came together for Rachel to meet at Darcy’s house and Uber from there. If the night turned out to be fun, she would just have a slumber party at Darcy’s place.

Darcy and Rachel had a few drinks (there may have been tequila involved) at her place, and upon arriving at Oktoberfest, spent the first few hours riding the upside-down rides and enjoying the German food and beer. Markus, Makiki, and their whole volleyball crew quickly escalated from the German food and beers to the dance floor. As the excitement of almost dying on the upside-down rides wore off, Darcy and Rachel made their way to the dancefloor as well.

There are conflicting stories as to who’s eyes met whose first, but Rachel is sure she had seen the tall handsome guy with the real glass stein (unlike all those flimsy plastic ones all the other guys were carrying) and had to go talk to him. Rachel and Markus spent the remainder of the evening dancing and flirting and the festivities were quickly wrapping up. Makiki and Markus, standing with Darcy and Rachel, saw the line of people waiting for an Uber ride home and all agreed they should just take the same Uber, and drop off Rachel and Darcy on the way.

As the Uber arrived at Darcy’s house, Markus walked the two girls to the door and with a long hug, he reluctantly said goodbye to Rachel. He sulked as he got back into the Uber looking at Makiki, who could clearly see his disappointment. Makiki looked at him and simply said, “Go back and get her!”

Markus got up the courage, and went back and knocked on Darcy’s door. To his surprise, Rachel answered. Markus took her by the hand while declaring to Darcy, “She’s coming with me!” As Rachel looked back to Darcy for approval, she already had one foot out the door. They were pretty inseparable from that night on…
