What is there to do in Scotland?
There is so much to do and see in Scotland! We have beautiful historic cities and towns, the most stunning landscape, and more castles than we know what to do with.
The central belt (between the major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow) has tons to do and all within about a 1 hour drive. For those wanting to go further afield we recommend a road trip to the Isle of Skye or the North Coast 500 to see some more of wild Scotland. But please get in touch and tell us how long you'll be in the country and we'll help recommend some 'must sees'. The week before the wedding, we will be in a different sightseeing spot each day and any one who wishes to join us and get our take on these landmarks, please see the 'Things to do' tab for the itinerary!
How do I get around Scotland?
It depends on what you are trying to do and see! If you are staying in the cities, public transport is best so you don't have to faff about with parking.
Edinburgh has a tram system, which you can get directly from the airport into the city centre.
In the central belt (anywhere between Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Stirling) there is good access via the trains. For context it takes about 40 minutes to get from Edinburgh to Stirling, and 50 minutes to get from Edinburgh to Glasgow.
However, if you want to explore further afield (like to the Highlands or some of the national parks) car rental is your best bet.
What should I do about accomodation?
For information about where to stay in Edinburgh (particularly the night before the wedding and the night of the wedding) please go to the 'Where to stay in Edinburgh?' tab.
But please book your accommodation as soon as possible particularly for the nights you want to stay in Edinburgh, as in August the world famous Fringe festival starts and accommodation will be harder to find the closer we get to the date! The Fringe runs annually and is the world's largest theatre and live comedy festival. It is truly amazing but the city is extremely crowded, so for those of you wanting to stay specifically to see the Fringe after the wedding, book in advance. For those wanting to avoid this peak time for the city (and peak costs) we recommend coming and exploring Scotland before the wedding itself to save on money.
Getting to the venue
As the venue is in the centre of Edinburgh, parking is limited (and honestly stupidly expensive).
Taxis or public transportation is recommended. The venue is a 14 minute walk (6 minute drive) from Haymarket station for tram and train travel. And a 16 minute walk from (14 minute drive) from Waverly train station.
The last train back to Falkirk is generally about 11:45, but given that the party is not set to end until 1 am, we suggest that staying overnight is easiest. Unless you want to go in on a taxi with friends :)
Hotels are discussed more in the 'Where to stay in Edinburgh' tab.
Will the event be indoors or outdoors
The weather in Scotland is unpredictable so we are prepared for all eventualities! The ceremony will take place upstairs inside the Ghille Dhu venue. After the ceremony, dependent on weather, cocktail hour will take place either downstairs in the main Ghillie Dhu bar, or outside in Rutland Garden square (a 2 minute walk away) if the weather is nice. Dinner and dancing will be back indoors upstairs in Ghillie Dhu.
What food and drink will be served?
Food: Canapes will be served during cocktail hour. Dinner will be a 3 course meal (meal choices will be sent out with the invitations), and at night there will be a buffet to refuel whilst dancing.
Drinks: It is very uncommon in Scotland to have an open bar at events because we would take the absolute mick and clear the bar out of all alcohol. Guests will receive a welcome drink, a glass of fizz to toast to bride and groom, and a half bottle of wine during dinner. There will be some money behind the bar, however when that runs out it will be a cash bar. It is not uncommon for guests in Scotland to sneakily bring a flask to the event, but just be stealthy!
Can I bring a date?
Your invitation should indicate if you have a plus one to the wedding, or your partner is explicitly named. However, if I have missed someone out (quite possibly given the amount to think about when planning a wedding) please reach out and we will see if we can make room!
Are kids welcome?
Sorry! This is a (mostly) kid-free wedding. Children that are invited have been explicitly named in the invitations (namely those who are travelling in from the States).
As much as we love your little ones, this is your opportunity to call a sitter and enjoy a night out!
Is there a gift registry?
You're presence at our wedding is enough, but should you wish to give a token of your affection there is more information in the 'Registry' tab on this website.
How can I share my photos?
