When I was 16 years old, my life took an unexpected and beautiful turn.

Though Raheim and I both grew up in Dominica, our paths never crossed until one fateful Sunday at a Pentecostal church service. Before meeting Raheim, I used to attend a Methodist church with my grandmother, but my mom wanted all her kids to be baptized, so she made us switch to the Pentecostal church with my aunt.

That first encounter with Raheim was special. Every Sunday thereafter, I looked forward to the church services, not just for the readings, but for the chance to see Raheim. Our connection grew stronger with each meeting, and soon, my affection for him blossomed into love. He was my first love, and we shared our first passionate kiss behind the church when I turned 17.

At that age, I didn't have a phone due to financial constraints, so I eagerly prepared for church each week, knowing it was the only time I could see him.

My parents didn't allow me to have a boyfriend, so these moments at church, at sports events, or occasional after-school encounters were all we had.

When I was 18, my grandpa sent visas for my family to come to the United States. Raheim and I had to part ways, as we both agreed that long distance would be too difficult. In the US, I dedicated myself to my studies and career, eventually graduating with a bachelor's degree in nursing and passing my state board exam.

After 10 long years, in 2024, I saved enough to return to Dominica. At a family and friends gathering, I spotted Raheim in a thick crowd, and an electric wave of happiness surged through me. We spent the night catching up, and it felt like no time had passed. Our old flame reignited, and our love grew stronger with each conversation.
