Getting to Nida National Park

Our wedding will be taking place in the beautiful Nida National Park, at Nidos prieplauka - an old, converted boat depo by the seaside.

Nida is a truly special place for us and for all Lithuanians.

It is a long tidal spit, bordered one side by the Baltic and on the other by a tidal Lagoon. With stunning beaches, sand dunes, pine forests and idyllic Lithuanian houses, it's a perfect place for a tranquil holiday so, if you have time we'd highly recommend that you come to Nida a few days early and stay. We will be doing exactly this!

The area is small enough that provided you stay somewhere close to the reception venue you will be right in the heart of things.

Details for how to get to Nida can be found below.

Travelling to Nida

To get to Nida you need to:

1) get to the town of Klaipeda (airport details below)

2) Get from Klaipeda to Smiltyne via the ferry (ferry details below)

3) get onwards transport to Nida (also explained below)

You can also get a small boat to Nida directly from Klaipeda which is a really fun option! (again - details below).

Our advice is therefore to arrive midweek and find accommodation on Nida itself. You can see options on the "where to stay page".

Airports

The closest airport to Klaipeda is "Palanga" and you can fly there from LDN Stanstead with Ryan Air or from LDN Gatwick via Riga with Air Baltic.

We would recommend you booking flights asap as there are limited flights and the price can rise as the busy season approaches.

You can also decide to fly to Vilnius, if you want to explore the capital beforehand, and then take a train to city of Klaipeda which is closer to the venue than Palanga.

Palanga Airport (38 km from Klaipėda). 35min to Klaipėda. For this trip you can either:

1) Rent a CityBee which is a short term car hire app for those who can drive (details below)

2) Call a bolt (Uber does not work) - which will cost about 30 EURO

3) Use bus M31: https://www.stops.lt/klaipeda/#minibus/31/b-a . you can pay for these buses by card but having cash doesn't hurt.

Kaunas Airport ( 220km from Klaipėda). by road, takes around 2h15min. There are also buses from Kaunas to Klaipeda

Vilnius Airport ( 307km from Klaipėda) - by road, takes around 3h15min. You can also get a train from Vilnius to Klaipėda.

Riga Airport in Latvia ( 275km from Klaipėda)- road through the villages, so it takes longer to reach Klaipėda, around 3h 45min.

Ferry to Smiltyne from the Mainland

You can reach Nida via a two different ferries with onward transport details in the next sectio,

FERRIES

1) There is a car ferry. You can get on this by either renting a car and driving on or by simply taking a local bus.

2) The other is pedestrian only and is accessible from the old town of Klaipeda.

CAR FERRY

Take it from from Klaipėda "Neringa" with “Smiltynės perkėla” ferries: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CRMQiLM3Fj3pXiGZ6 .

You must take a ferry to Smiltynė from Klaipėda:

New Ferry Terminal, Nemuno str.8, Klaipėda, Lithuania.

Timetables: https://keltas.lt/en/timetable/ In summer and winter seasons timetables are different.

Important: check the timetable for the last and the first ferry from Smiltynė, if you will be staying not in Nida. The last one From Smiltynė in a summer time is 02:20 and the first one is on 05:20 in the morning.

From the Ferry (Smiltynė) to Nida there is ~47km and it takes ~50 min.

BUS TO NIDA VIA THE CAR FERRY

If not renting a car you can just hop on the bus to Nida from the bus station in Klaipeda: https://maps.app.goo.gl/x8a4HE77eirxKwwz5

The bus will drives directly onto the ferry across and then drive onwards the town of Nida. Tickets can be bought here or at the terminal:

If getting the bus onto the car ferry - the bus continues onwards to Nida

If getting the pedestrian ferry you can hop on a bus on the other side: https://autobusubilietai.lt/en (search "Smiltyne, LT Klaipeda" to Nida).

There are also rental bikes in Klaipeda you can take if you want a challenge!!

The Boat from Klaipeda to Nida!

If you want a more fun route to Nida from Klaipeda you can also take a small local tourist boat.

These can be accessed Klaipeda waterfront: https://goo.gl/maps/NkerrQhW6kn2P5za7

You can buy online: https://bilietai.klaipedanida.lt/

CITYBEE

"CityBee" is a short term rental app that is really good in Lithuania.

You will need to get the app and have your driving licence scanned - which, while incredibly quick, is worth doing before you travel.

You can then use their cars as much or as little as you want. The have the advantage of being able to be left in designated parking spaces at the airport as well.

NOTE: you cannot leave them on the Nida side of the water as this is a national park. You need to take them to the mainland. You can keep the car over a number of days so this is not an issue.

Alternatives to Nida

If you cannot find accommodation on Nida or want to stay somewhere else for whatever reason you could also explore accommodation in Klaipeda or Palanga which also has nice beaches and is a bit of a holiday hotspot.

See the "Where to stay page" for more details.
