On a random Friday night in January 2020, Becca decided to go line dancing with her friends on a whim as she usually chose to go on Thursday or Saturday nights. Matthew hadn’t been to a country bar in over a year and randomly decided to go with some of his friends that night as well. Matthew, if you didn’t know, has two left feet as one of Becca’s friends so graciously pointed out, so a country bar known for line dancing is nowhere close to where he should have been that night. But where his dancing skills lacked, his outgoing personality shined. Matthew was sitting at a table with his friends and a pretty woman sitting at the high-top table caught his attention. He couldn’t help but look, as she had a big smile and was laughing with friends. At that moment, they made eye contact, and on and off, glances continued.

All his friends advised Matt not to approach this pretty woman with a terrible pickup line; Matthew did it anyway. Becca was pretty caught off guard, but with her warm and welcoming personality, she allowed Matthew to buy her a drink and hang out for a while. His persistence showed throughout the night, even as other guys came up and asked her to dance, he stayed behind at the table and got to know Becca’s friends.

Talking to her friends, Matthew learned more about Becca and realized she was the REAL DEAL. Towards the end of the night, he asked her if they could get dinner sometime. Becca responded with the following weekend on a Saturday, and Matthew told her that was too long to wait to go on a date with her. So, she agreed to a weeknight date, and their first date happened the following Tuesday. As Matthew’s friends started leaving for the night, he decided to stay and get to know Becca more. When the bar made the last call, Matthew walked Becca to her car, making his Uber driver wait for him. There, he did something he had never done before, and against his parent’s teachings, his friends' advice, and any common sense, Matthew kissed Becca while saying goodbye to her at her car.

The date came around on Tuesday and everything was going well. Matthew and Becca, both having very driven personalities, talked about all the things important to them. They talked about goals, kids, work, and friendships. Becca and Matthew knew that they didn’t want to waste each other's time and got down to the key points of relationships. During this discussion, Becca decided to bring up the fact Matthew had kissed her - not even on a first date, but on a first meeting! She schooled him for the next five minutes on this, and how she recommends not doing that to another gal, and Matthew thought the relationship was over before it began. But Becca’s personality came through again and she allowed him to take her for a drink after he seemed to accept the schooling well.

After dropping her off that night, Matthew didn’t think he would ever get a second date. But against Becca’s better judgment, and her sister, Sarah’s warning, she gave him yet another chance to redeem himself. From two dates to three to four, then five, Matthew and Becca’s relationship grew more and more. From a trip to Colorado on a whim, to having a picnic with alpacas, and a trip to Utah their relationship deepened in the weeks and months that followed.

Then Matthew had to leave for training with the military and Becca to fieldwork rotations for school. Through the time apart, they continued to build their relationship from a distance doing anything they could to have time together in person. After numerous late-night conversations on the phone, Facetime calls, silly date nights from afar, and a memorable proposal in May of 2021, Matthew and Becca finally were both done with training and school the following May. Now living in Omaha, Matthew, serving as a pilot for the Air National Guard, and Becca, as an Occupational Therapist, they are starting their life together.
