Our Wedding

Contrary to most people’s assumptions, Regan and I are not technically high school sweethearts. I’m not sure we spoke more than once or twice during the years we overlapped — which is impressive, considering our school had fewer than 100 students. When we first really met Regan had just graduated with the forgotten class of 2020 and was gearing up to make the long move across the country to attend school in Virginia. I was spending the majority of my time that summer trying to ignore COVID restrictions and maximize the amount of time spent with my friends after months of being constrained to Zoom classrooms. Some of those friends also happened to be pretty close with Regan as well, and soon enough, we were hanging out: taking day trips, playing pickleball, and spending as much time outside as we could. Somewhere in all that Regan and I started talking to each other – and what started as mundane conversations slowly became something neither of us expected.&nbsp; Over the next year, we did our best to stay in touch. I was wrapping up high school while she was starting college — two different chapters, but we still made time to check in with each other. Regan kept me updated on life in Virginia, from dorm stories to new classes, and I returned the favor as I figured out my own plans for the future.&nbsp; It wasn’t until the following summer that I finally asked her to be my girlfriend — and it was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life. It was only our second or third time hanging out just the two of us, and I could tell she was still feeling a bit unsure. Thankfully, she said yes, and just like that, we started dating.It wasn’t perfect timing, as she was headed back to school in the fall, and I was staying in town for college, but we were determined to make it work. And we did. The next three years weren’t easy. We only saw each other for a few months in the summer and a couple of weeks in the winter, but we stayed committed. We were intentional with our communication, and made the most of every call, text, and visit. People sometimes ask me when or how I first knew she was going to be my wife, and honestly, I’ve never had a concrete answer. Maybe it was during the years we spent dating from over 700 miles apart — realizing that if distance couldn’t deter us, not much could. Maybe it’s the way her smile can brighten even my worst days, or how her compassion and humility affect everyone lucky enough to know her. I don’t think it was one specific moment or quality that made everything click — it was something quieter and steadier. Over the course of our relationship, I just became more and more certain that she was the one. And that’s why this past June, while we were on a walk together, I made the easiest decision of my life: I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. We’re so excited to start this next chapter together and can’t wait to celebrate with you all this November! - Ernie
