Alright, this is the sort of thing that when you sit down to write it, you have no idea what you’re supposed to write, and hopefully you only write it once, so here it goes. Renee and Greg will try not to be boring.
Renee and Greg met in the completely normal year of 2020. Well, technically they met in 2019 at a trivia night, but they* didn’t remember this until later, so we’re not going to count it.
*Renee did remember, but we’re not going to judge Greg for it.
Their relationship blossomed in all the ways you would expect in the claustrophobic pandemic era: putting on old movies that the other hadn’t seen, technically working together – but really far apart – at St. Margaret, and taking turns making meals. Renee’s really good at macaroons now, and Greg will never be able to recreate that one pulled pork on the smoker.
Tangent about the movies: as best as they can piece together, the first movie they watched together was a Renee Special, the 1980 comedy Used Cars. Legend has it Renee settled for Greg because Kurt Russell was already taken.
When the world reopened, the relationship blossomed. Now they could go see Used Cars in theaters! Just kidding. They saw Black Widow. And Eternals. And some other junk. Look, there wasn’t much to choose from in early 2021, but Renee and Greg like to think their relationship will be more enduring than the movies they saw.
Renee will go on record that she knew Greg was the one when they traveled to New York City in 2022, and he went out of his way to take her to the best tourist destinations: the Ghostbusters headquarters, the New York Public Library lions, as seen in Ghostbusters, and the wrong subway line once or twice, as seen in Ghostbusters 2.
(Here is a picture of Renee hanging out with Slimer.)
Live look-in at Renee and Greg writing the “how we met” thing for the website
GREG: Are we talking too much about movies?
RENEE: I mean, we were cooped up for a long time. What else was there?
GREG: What about the–
RENEE: The matching Subarus?
GREG: Well they don’t match exactly. Yours is a cooler color, and manual transmission.
Renee will joke that she has family everywhere, which has made it really easy for her and Greg to travel to North Carolina (Wake Forest 21, Pitt 17), Georgia (Michigan State 31, Pitt 21), Kentucky (Louisville 24, Pitt 10), and Ohio (Pitt 28, Cincinnati 27!!). Don’t let the fact she’s reading a book in the second quarter hide the fact that she really, really loves sports, or at least loves Greg enough to tolerate it. They wrote this the day after Notre Dame 37, Pitt 15.
GREG: Oh! The time you played softball so we had enough people to not forfeit!
It didn’t take long before friends and coworkers asked when the wedding was. Renee and Greg apologize if they’ve told you seven separate times about the engagement, or if they missed you entirely (neither of them like social media all that much). Did you see her ring? It’s a good ring. You should ask about the ring.
RENEE: How to we end this thing? How long are these supposed to be?
GREG, typing on laptop: How about… 165 Fun and Flirty Questions from Teen Vogue? 102 Fun Newlywed Game Questions for the Ultimate Bonding Activity?
RENEE, reading: If you could travel to any time period in a time machine, when would you choose and why?
GREG: Right now, here with you! Awww.
RENEE: Wrong. The current answer is anytime, as long as it’s with me.
GREG: Half point?
