Filipino Wedding Traditions Celebrating Love, Family, and Culture

Our wedding ceremony will include several beautiful Filipino traditions that symbolize unity, blessings, and the joining of two families. These customs have been passed down through generations and are an important part of the Filipino heritage. We are so excited to share them with you! We hope this guide helps everyone understand the meaning behind each moment so you can fully enjoy and celebrate with us.

WEDDING SPONSORS (NINONGS & NINANGS)

In Filipino weddings, sponsors are honored family members and friends who play an important role in the ceremony. They are chosen because they represent strong marriages, wisdom, and guidance. Their presence symbolizes the support and love of the couple’s community.

THE VEIL AND CORD CEREMONY

The veil ceremony symbolizes the couple being clothed as one. Two sponsors gently place a veil over the bride’s head and the groom’s shoulder. This represents unity, protection, and the couple beginning their life together under one covering of love and commitment. The cord ceremony represents the everlasting bond of marriage. A decorative cord is placed in a figure-eight shape around the couple’s shoulders by sponsors. The figure eight symbolizes infinity and eternal love, reminding the couple that they are now bound together in marriage.

THE COIN CEREMONY

The coin ceremony represents prosperity and shared responsibility. The groom presents the bride with 13 coins, called arras, symbolizing his promise to provide for the family and share his blessings. The bride accepts the coins as a sign of trust and commitment to building a life together.

THE UNITY CANDLE

The unity candle symbolizes two families becoming one.The bride and groom each light a candle representing their individual lives. Together they use those flames to light a larger candle, symbolizing their union and the start of their life as one family.

FILIPINO MONEY DANCE

During the reception, we will celebrate with a fun Filipino tradition called the Money Dance. Guests are invited to dance with the bride and groom and pin money onto their clothing. This tradition symbolizes prosperity, generosity, and support for the newly married couple as they begin their life together. Some people even braid money into crowns, purses, leis, and sashes. It’s also a joyful way for everyone to celebrate and share in the happiness of the day! These traditions mean so much to us, and we are honored to share them with all of you.
