Our Wedding

Derrick and Rilee spend 95% of their time around show cattle, whether it be at a cattle show or in the barn at home, so it isn’t too surprising that they met at a cattle show a few summers ago. The Future Mr. and Mrs. Wood both grew up showing cattle, specifically Red Angus heifers. In 2019, the North American Junior Red Angus Event was held in Grand Island, Nebraska and the states of Texas and Oklahoma were stalled in neighboring rows within the barn. Not even two full days into the week’s events went by before Derrick and Rilee ran into each other. The showmanship contest was coming up, and Derrick made a deal with Rilee that if she were to win senior showmanship he would take her to Sonic for an Oreo Blast (her absolute favorite). Two days later, they were sitting in Derrick’s truck at Sonic in Grand Island, NE on what they would now consider their first date. When the week was over, Derrick was headed back to Stillwater for his sophomore year at Oklahoma State University and Rilee was headed to College Station for her freshman year at Texas A&M University. As you would expect, they didn’t stay in touch much longer. Fast forward almost four years later, and they were both hired to work for the Pembrook family at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, but neither of them knew it until they arrived on day one of the show. Cattlemen’s Congress was a 14 day trip for the PCC crew that year. By the end of day 14 Derrick and Rilee decided they weren’t going their separate ways for the second time. Shortly after Congress Derrick accepted a full-time job at PCC as their show and sale cattle manager, and Rilee found herself traveling to Fairview, Oklahoma often as she completed her M.S degree in College Station. Rilee also spent the summer living in Fairview and traveling to all of the junior national shows with the PCC crew. The first of those shows was back in Grand Island where her and Derrick met. Rilee and Derrick are happiest in the barn and share a passion for show cattle, so for Derrick, proposing at the PCC Annual Spring Production sale was a no-brainer. With all of their family and the majority of their friends present, Derrick proposed after a day of washing, blowing, and clipping sale calves. For them, it was perfect. Rilee now lives in Fairview, OK with Derrick while he continues to work for the Pembrook family and she works for the American Chianina Association. They continue to spend their days surrounded by livestock, and look forward to raising a family of their own the same way after marriage.
