Riley and Caleb attended the University of Toledo for their nursing careers. During the fall semester of 2018, Riley noticed a very cute boy who ate breakfast at the same time as her on Tuesdays and Thursdays before class. She pointed him out to her college roommate, Brenna, and began referring to him as "Breakfast Boy". At the same time, Brenna had a small crush on a boy in a fraternity. Riley found Brenna's crush on Instagram and jokingly typed out a DM to him saying "My friend thinks you're cute!" but accidentally sent it. Brenna then made it her personal mission to find "Breakfast Boy" on Instagram to get her revenge on Riley. Unable to locate him, she noticed one of the boys he ate breakfast with wore a fraternity shirt. Brenna then looked up the fraternity on Instagram and found the friend. She proceeded to DM him "My friend thinks your friend is cute. She sees him at breakfast" and left Riley's Instagram page information. The friend passed the message along to Caleb who replied with "If it's the girl I'm thinking of, then yes, I want her information." Caleb recalls seeing very curly brown hair, big brown eyes, and a plate full of bacon. He was hooked.

Caleb asked Riley out on a date to Dairy Queen where they ended up spending over three hours just talking to each other about everything: family, friends, goals, dreams. They both knew this was something incredibly special. They dated for many years, with Caleb moving north to Michigan to continue his relationship with Riley after he graduated nursing school. Then, while in Italy, Caleb proposed to Riley on September 21st, 2024 at the top of a mountain overlooking Lago di Sorapis.
