Downtown Huntsville is one of Robert and Laura's favorite spots to spend free time after work or on the weekends. Street parking is free during weekends. Pictured above is Big Spring Park, one of our preferred walking paths. There are a variety of cafes, bakeries, and restaurants to visit. We always enjoy grabbing a treat and walking around the historic district.
If you are looking for more than a snack, and are interested in trying one of the couple's favorite date spots, we would suggest stopping at the British pub Parliament and Poppy. Look for the red telephone booth right outside the place. You can't miss it!
Huntsville is a prime location for all sorts of hiking! You can find a variety of places to go within 30-45 minutes of downtown Huntsville. One of my favorite places to hike is Blevins Gap. To the left are hiking trails, and to the right is an overlook facing west that provides a beautiful spot to watch the sun set over the city. This was the place where Robert and I had our first date, and also the place where he proposed!
There are other hiking trails such as Rainbow Mountain, Monte Sano State Park (with a $5 entry fee), or the greenways such as Indian Creek for an easy stroll. If you'd like to even go underground, consider going on a tour through the Cathedral Caverns.
One of the best places to take a quick trip while in town is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. This place is called Rocket City, after all!
If you happen to be in town the Friday before the wedding, one of our favorite dates is an event hosted here known as "Cocktails and Cosmos". It is an hour-long demonstration of a provided topic (such as spotting constellations in the Alabama skies) in their planetarium. You can purchase drinks or snacks before the show begins. It is super fun!
Yellowhammer Brewery, right next to Campus 805 (an old school converted into a hangout space with a few restaurants, breweries, and more), is one of our favorite spots to go grab a drink with friends. They have a fantastic selection of drinks on tap, and they also serve wood-oven pizzas and homemade ice cream.
If you happen to be in town on a Wednesday evening, consider going to one of Laura's favorite events in town: Cocktails on the Mountain. From 5 PM - 8 PM, consider going to this free event where you may purchase food or beverage, listen to live music, and watch the sunset go down over the hills.
Burritt on the Mountain is also the historical site where Robert's mother, Victoria, does a lot of volunteer work. She works with other volunteers on old recipes, as well as tending to the farm-land and animals on site. Maybe you'll see her there!
