We first saw each other through the foggy haze of beer goggles at a brewery in Boulder, Colorado. We were both attending what we thought would be a light-hearted night of playing board games and meeting new friends. We often think about what would have happened had we let that night pass like many others, spent on the comfort of our respective couches instead of out socializing. It's mindboggling how tiny, inconsequential choices can shape our lives.
I knew John was the one as soon as I spotted his Pink Floyd t-shirt and puppy-dog eyes. He was certain once he saw my flawlessly sharp winged eyeliner and striking sense of fashion. After some coy back-and-forth, we decided we liked each other a lot and quickly began to neglect all the other friends we met that night. Fortunately, it was just before a global pandemic that we decided we are basically perfect for each other and made it "official."
What we've learned is that if you find someone who makes you a better person, they probably belong in your life. If that person is also someone whose face you like to affectionately smush, then you should probably hold on tight and never let go.
