Robben Island - The place where Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in jail. The island has since become a symbol of the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression.
You can see Robben Island from the top of Table Mountain and there are boat tours that leave from the V&A Waterfront.
The V&A Waterfront is a mixed-use destination located in the oldest working harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. With Table Mountain as its backdrop, the 123-hectare neighbourhood is where millions of people visit each year. It has a mixture of restaurants, shops and boat tours.
The V&A Waterfront is a central part of the very beginning of the settlement of the city of Cape Town. In 1654, two years after his arrival in this relatively safe bay at the foot of Table Mountain, Jan van Riebeeck built a small jetty as part of his task to establish a refreshment station at the Cape. Fresh water and fresh produce were provided to the ships of the Dutch East India Company on their arduous and lengthy journey to their outposts in Java and Batavia. The sea and the harbour lie at the heart of Cape Town's history.
Rounding out the African experience would be visiting a Safari park. The website mentions the top 5 game reserves near Cape Town. Some offer the full Big 5 - Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Leopard, and Lion. Some others offer varieties like Cheetah and antelope, including some but not all of the Big 5.

Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city centre, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous ‘huurhuisjes’ (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. These individuals, known as Cape Malays, were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape.
The houses in Bo-Kaap are a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, positioned in distinctive multi-coloured rows on steeply cobbled roads. The choice of colour is said to be attributed to the fact that, while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, the owners painted all the houses bright colours as an expression of their freedom. Bo-Kaap is home to predominantly Muslim families who have been living there for generations. Today, the Bo-Kaap community is a significant part of the city's cultural heritage. They've also become known for their delicious bobotie curry, a must-try!
