Ruby and Gavin met on their missions to Washington DC North. They spent most of their time in Maryland in an area they shared called White Oak. Ruby's first impression was that Gavin was unbearably annoying. Gavin didn't think about Ruby at all.

Gavin recorded in his journal that he was quietly, but quickly, falling in love with Ruby. Ruby would have no clue for the months to come that her best friend felt that way.

They became really close friends before both of their missions ended and called almost every day after going home. Gavin knew he wanted to marry her from very early on. They met up before school in Provo and went on their first date. She spilled ice cream on his grandmothers blanket, fabulous first date impression. As the months went on, they met up every week to go on dates and hangout. One time Gavin sneezed while bowling and let go of the ball too late, it flew into the other lane and broke the neighboring machine... bowling was going to be a whole lot more expensive that day. They wrote down his contact information but thankfully never reached out.

Ruby and Gavin loved to go on walks and hikes, enjoy movies and dinners (he cooked innumerable meals for Ruby), games and concerts (Ruby dragged Gavin to the most random venues), they even took a trip to North Carolina to spend time with his family.

Just as they were getting ready to take the next steps, Gavin got cleared for heart surgery. Through love and trust, Gavin got his heart fixed and began the healing journey. It was going to be a long process and they knew they would have to be patient.

Gavin encouraged Ruby to go on a study abroad to London to have a fun summer and take her mind off things back home with his recovery. So she went and had a wonderful time. Because of that though, it seemed like they were going to spend nearly the whole summer separated.

They planned to bring Gavin to Hawaii after the study abroad so that they could see each other again and show Gavin where Ruby grew up. Ruby wasn't expecting a ring until he was fully recovered from surgery.

Ruby suggested an early morning swim, Gavin added that they should take their phones to get a picture together. "Since when did you ever want to take pictures, what are you proposing?" were just about the exact words Ruby said, full heartedly teasing and not serious at all. Gavin was scared out of his wits. Down on the beach in the early morning all alone Gavin got down on one knee and gave Ruby the sparkliest ring you ever did see. The following week was spent celebrating with family and planning adventures to come!
