Ruth started a journal when it all began, and her first entry is this.
“He called me tonight. I thought he made a mistake, so I texted and he called me again. He asked me if I wanted to hang out. I asked him ‘what does that entail?’ And he responded with ‘like a date?’…so we are going on a date. This is wild.”
To put this in context, they had seen each other through mutual friends quite a lot. Mitch even helped Ruth and a friend move into their new apartment. Ruth never thought anything would ever happen between her and Mitch because they had meet years prior in college. How she had seen it was that he was Mitch, and she was Ruth. So she didn’t try to put on a front, or be who she wasn't - she was loud and awkward. So when he called, she didn’t think anything of it and thought he was mistaken. When he asked to “hang out” she was so taken aback and confused! It didn’t make sense! But sometimes the greatest things in life are gifts that don’t make sense in the beginning.
When Mitch told Ruth that his mother and grandmother would be in town, I was overcome with anxiety. She had never met a significant others parents before, and didn’t want to be disliked. However, as they dove into conversation and shared laughter over breakfast at Denny's, her nerves started to disappear. She saw how much they cared and loved one another. Seeing him interact with two of the most important women in his life, her heart was filled with joy. She wanted to be able to see him interact with them again and again. And then it was time for Mitch to meet Ruth's parents later that summer. For Ruth, to be able to see the three people she loves the most interact was the greatest feeling in the world. Having seen Mitch with his mom and grandma and then with her parents, her heart was filled with the desire to be a home for him: to create an environment where he felt all the love she saw him give. And before she knew it, he had created that environment for them.
