Jess: Jamie and I have been best friends for over ten years. We met while working at Olive Garden in Binghamton, NY. She got me through so many long and busy shifts at the OG, and I will be forever grateful. I could not ask for a more caring and supportive best friend, a friend who challenges me physically (some of those hikes...wow!) and mentally (she is never afraid to ask the hard questions when I am trying to make big decisions) and refuses to let me spend important holidays alone. Plus, she is always game for a spontaneous adventure. I could not imagine a better person to be my maid of honor on our special day.
Christina Koehne - Matron of Honor
Jess: Christina was the first friend I made at SUNY New Paltz, and we have spent countless hours hiking, traveling, hanging out, and more. We were also roomies for a year. Christina is the first person I turn to with personal and student-centered issues, and I am so excited that we will live close to each other for many years to come and get to raise our families alongside each other. I am thrilled to have her be a part of our big day.
Rebecca Spring - Bridesmaid
Jess: Becca and I have been friends since we were teenagers and heavily involved in our church youth groups in Western North Carolina. However, our true bond developed as aspiring anthropology majors at UNC Chapel Hill. I remember the first day that I walked into ANTH 525: Culture & Person and saw Becca sitting near the front of the classroom on the left. It was at this point, I learned that she had switched majors, and I knew our friendship was fate. That summer we traveled to Peru together, where we developed a love for the Peruvian people, the country, and, of course, Andean archaeology. Since then, we have both gone on to get higher degrees in Andean Archaeology and are now research collaborators. I know without a doubt that I would not have a dissertation without Becca. She taught me ArcGIS from scratch despite a six state separation between us, and has been a sounding board more times than I can count. I will forever be in her debt, and I am delighted that she is going to be a part of my big day.
Liz DeOrnellas - Bridesmaid
Jess: Liz was my first friend at UNC Chapel Hill. We met during Freshman Camp the week before classes started, and we have been great friends ever since (almost two decades). She was and will always be my Carolina basketball partner. I was honored to be a bridesmaid in her wedding, and I am excited for her to return the favor and be a part of our special day.
Heather Venrick - Bridesmaid
Jess: Heather was my Resident Advisor (RA) during my freshmen year of college. We became instant friends and remained close throughout college. We reconnected and became even closer when we found ourselves living in the same town roughly six years post-graduation. She is always there when I need a shoulder to cry on, an ear to complain to, or a friend to jump up and down with in excitement. I am thrilled to have her be a part of our big day.
Claire Brown - Bridesmaid
Jess: Claire was my first and best friend at Binghamton University. From our weekly "Revenge" nights and drinks downtown to department parties and study sessions, we always found a way to have a good time. Her friendship and support is what got me through the roughest years of graduate school. I am so excited she is back stateside, and I cannot wait for her to be a part of our big day.
Mark Dougherty - Best Man
Ryan: I could not think of a better best man than my dad. He has been one of my biggest influences, and I would not be a professor had it not been for his unchanging love and support. As we take a new stage in our lives, I've realized how much positive energy he has given us to allow us to take this leap. I'm so grateful to have him as a father and friend.
Ethan Dougherty - Groomsman
Ryan: Ethan has been a great brother and influence. The fact that he can manage so much complex operations with three different soccer organizations, and somehow manage teaching within that, has been a powerful motivator for me to pursue as much as I can. I am honored to have my brother standing next to me as a groomsman on our special day.
Alex Saunders - Groomsman
Ryan: I'm happy to have Alex as a groomsman. We had great times as children, such as going to Disneyworld and Six Flags in California. I've had the rare opportunity to spend time with him and his family this year. Watching him interact with his wife and child inspired me on how to be a successful father and husband.
Ed Saunders Jr. - Groomsman
Ryan: I'm so glad that my uncle is a groomsman. His passion for his career as an airplane pilot has been contagious. Every time he visits he brings me Belgian waffle cookies and stories of his flying adventures. I remember once where he took us out on the tarmac in Phoenix and showed us the cockpit with an in-depth summary of how all of the switches and knobs worked.
Chase Smeeks - Groomsmen
Jess: I am so excited to have my brother be a part of our big day. His love and support mean the world to me, and without his encouragement and guidance, I may have never found the love of my life.
Ryan: I am happy to have Chase stand by my side on our big day, and I look forward to gaining a brother.
Chandler Smeeks - Ring Bearer
We are thrilled to have my nephew Chandler in charge of our wedding rings. He is going to look so handsome all dressed up for the day, and Jess cannot wait to dance with him at the reception.
Lola Smeeks - Flower Girl
We are so excited to see my little niece Lola in her "princess" dress walking down the aisle. She will steal everyone's hearts!
