With 3,000-foot (nearly-1,000-meter) canyon walls lining the Grijalva River, Sumidero Canyon National Park (Parque Nacional Cañón del Sumidero) is home to monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife. The best views of the canyon are from the bottom, so join the stream of boats cruising up and down the river, and take in the scenery.
Chiapa de Corzo was always one of my favorite stops on trips to Tuxtla for its charming Mexican crafts at great prices—a perfect spot for shopping!
Located just 9 miles (15 kilometers) from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and 34 miles (55 kilometers) from San Cristóbal, it’s easiest to reach by private vehicle. Many Sumidero Canyon tours also stop in Chiapa de Corzo and include transportation.
Things to Know:
- Look for the La Pochota ceiba tree, said to mark the town’s founding.
- Bring cash, as ATMs are limited and many places don’t accept cards.
- Plan for a short visit and pair it with a boat ride through Sumidero Canyon.
