Strangely, within weeks, three job offers emerged: two from familiar companies back in Michigan and one enticing prospect in San Diego, which was a close commute to Kearny Mesa, where his brother Robert and sister-in-law had settled years ago.

Setting up her own consulting business was Gina’s ticket to independence and new opportunities. One of her early clients happened to be based in San Diego, which prompted her to start regular visits. One evening, she found herself sipping a beer with a friend on the beach in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego. As she looked around at the lively streets and felt the gentle breeze from the Pacific Ocean, a thought crossed her mind: "Wow, I could live here".
